The pearl

Hello to all readers. Living with chronic illness and disability can be very wearisome, particularly as it can seem so very pointless. However, it is possible to learn to live with it skilfully, in a Christian spirit, and to look hard for the hidden plusses it might bring…

The pearl

Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them (1 Corinthians 7:17).

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it (Matthew 13:45).

Father,
Why do you give me insights day after day,
And help me shape them into prayers?
Is it for my sake, alone?

Others pursue their busy lives,
But my vocation lies in weakness,
Weariness,
Loss of freedom,
And undesired rest.

Chronic ill-health exacts a heavy price,
But offers a secret pearl:
The time to pray.

Compelled to pay the price,
I accept it as best I can,
But gladly choose the pearl.

Thank you, Lord,
For this unforeseen blessing
Of the life you have assigned to me.

Help me to be contented with my lot,
To grasp the insights you give me,
And to express them faithfully and clearly
In my prayers.

Perhaps, one day,
Others will find them useful, too.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
