Hello to every reader. There is a back-story to this prayer, which I wrote yesterday morning. Since a serious thyroid illness almost 20 years ago, I have dry eye syndrome, which means lots of eye drops, and no tears. I lost my long hair to the same condition, and now just have stubble, kept tidy with a number 2 cut once a month. I can’t handle or wear any kind of perfume, either, because of the effect it has on my unprotected eyes. So you can see how far I am from being able to follow Mary’s wonderful example. Instead, I wrote this prayer:
I wish I could be like Mary
* Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair (John 12:3; NIV).
* As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them (Luke 7:38; NIV).
*”Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven – as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.” Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven” (Luke 7:47-8; NIV).
Lord,
I wish I could be like Mary –
But I don’t have tears,
So I can’t wash your feet
As she did;
And I don’t have hair,
So I can’t dry them
As she did;
And you are not here in body,
So I can’t kiss your feet
To express my love,
As she did;
Nor can I pour nard on them,
As she did –
But I can tell you how sorry I am
For all my sins and failures,
And show how much I love you
By serving others in your name,
As best I can.
