A counsellor’s prayer

A counsellor’s prayer

But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction (Job 36:15; NIV).

Speak the truth to each other (Zechariah 8:16; NIV).

The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love (Galatians 5:6; NIV).

Father,
Please help me
To build therapeutic relationships
With those who suffer.

Help me not to judge,
But to accept them as they are,
So they can slowly learn
To accept themselves more fully.

Help me not to advise,
But to listen;
Not to pretend, or conceal myself,
But to be open and honest,
So they experience
New ways of relating to others.

May I never collude
With those who believe they can do nothing
To help themselves,
Instead encouraging them
To explore the connections between
Their problems, thoughts, feelings,
Symptoms and behaviours,
So they can develop insight,
Change and grow.

Help me to maintain
My own boundaries,
To be aware of my limits and limitations,
To preserve confidentiality,
And to get help
When I am out of my depth.

Finally, Lord,
Please help me
Never to forget those who suffer,
But to pray for them every day.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
