Love

Love

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have the power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge (Ephesians 3:17-19; NIV).

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them (1 John 4:16; NIV).

Father,
You know all about me –
You know exactly
What I’m like.

So it’s impossible
For me to grasp
Why you should love me –
Or how much!

Lord, thank you

For loving me,
And thank you
For being love.

Contemplation

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength (Mark 12:30; NIV).

Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28; NIV).

Father,
In contemplation,
Time seems to stand still.
The world retreats
As I reach out
With all my heart, soul,
Mind and strength
To you,
My Lord
And my God.

Faith

Faith

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe” (John 20:29; NIV).

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see
(Hebrews 11:1; NIV).

Father,
I love you so much.

I long to see you,
To hear your voice,
And feel your touch.

But Jesus blessed
Those who have not seen,
And yet believe.

So I must rest content
For now –
And live by faith.

Love

Love

Love your neighbour as yourself (Luke 10:27; NIV).

The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love (Galatians 5:6; NIV).

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone (Romans 12:18; NIV).

In peace I will lie down and sleep (Psalm 4:8; NIV).

Father,
Please help me to offer love
To everyone
I have contact with today.

Help me with every thought
About others,
Every word I speak,
Or write,
And with all my deeds.

Then I will be at peace –
With them,
With you,
And with myself,
When I talk with you
At the end of the day.

Contemplation

Contemplation

Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth
(Psalm 46; 10; NIV).

Be silent before the Sovereign Lord (Zephaniah 1:7; NIV).

Father,
I never seem to have
Enough time
For silent contemplation.

I’m often tempted
To cut it short,
So I can get on
With all the practicalities
Of my day.

But what could be
More important
Than reaching out to you
Before it starts?

Light

Light

You, LORD, are my lamp; the LORD turns my darkness into light (2 Samuel 22:29; NIV).

But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it (Matthew 7:14; NIV).

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path (Psalm 119:105; NIV).

Teach me your way, LORD; lead me in a straight path (Psalm 27:11; NIV).

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12; NIV).

Lord,
You are the light
That shines in my darkness.

Please help me
To stay on the narrow path
That leads to life,
To follow your Son,
And to serve you
The best I can,
Along the way.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Faith

Faith

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see
(Hebrews 11:1; NIV).

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe” (John 20:29; NIV).

The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth (Psalm 145:18; NIV).

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength (Mark 12:30).

Faith isn’t about
Feeling close to God,
Or having
Amazing spiritual experiences –
Though such things
Are always wonderful.

It’s about trusting him
In good times and bad,
Knowing he is with us,
And loving him
With all our heart, soul,
Mind and strength –
Whether we feel his presence
Or not.
