He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman Soldiers to be crucified (Mark 15:15; NLT).
They spit on him and took the staff and struck him on the head with it again and again (Matthew 27:30; NLT).
Then the soldiers nailed him to the cross (Mark 15:24; NLT).
My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; an evil gang closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and feet (Psalm 22:16; NLT).
Everyone who sees me mocks me. They sneer and shake their heads, saying, “Is this the one who relies on the LORD? Then let the LORD save him!” (Psalm 22:7-8; NLT).
Look! The LORD is coming from far away, burning with anger, surrounded by thick, rising smoke. His lips are filled with fury; his words consume like fire (Isaiah 30:27; NLT).
We, your people,
Are beneath contempt
When we inflict pain,
On those in our power.
May our souls
Until we fall to our knees,
Begging for your forgiveness –
And for theirs.
