My goal

My goal

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14; NIV).

Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant (Galatians 1:10; NLT).

Lord,
You are my goal.

Please help me
To leave behind
All that proves unhelpful
As I press on through life
Towards you –
Even if other people
Disapprove!

CONTEMPLATION

Contemplation

Be silent before the Sovereign Lord (Zephaniah 1:7; NIV).

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him (Psalm 37:7; NIV).

Clouds and thick darkness surround him (Psalm 97:2; NIV).

God is light (1 John 1:5; NIV).

In your presence there is fullness of joy (Psalm 16:11; NRSV).

But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17; NIV).

You satisfy me more than the richest feast (Psalm 63:5; NLT).

Silence.
Stillness.
Waiting.

Darkness.
Emptiness.
Space.

Light.
Presence.
Worship.

Praise.
Joy.
Peace.

Love.
Union.
Fulfilment.

Daily prayer

Daily prayer

“If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me” (Jeremiah 29:13-14; NLT).

“Keep on seeking, and you will find” (Matthew 7:7; NLT).

Father,
I seek you
With all my heart.

May I find you
At all times,
In all places,
And in all people.

Through Jesus’ name,
Amen.

EVERYTHING I NEED

Everything I need

We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance (Romans 5:3; NLT).

As soon as I pray, you answer me; you encourage me by giving me strength (Psalm 138:3; NLT).

“To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given” (Matthew 13:12; NLT).

We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love (1 John 4:16; NLT).

Lord,
Thank you for giving me
Everything I need in life –

All the trials I need,
All the strength I need,
All the lessons I need,
And all the love I need.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Always and everywhere

Always and everywhere

“If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me” (Jeremiah 29:13-14; NIV).

“Keep on seeking, and you will find” (Matthew 7:7; NLT).

Father,
I seek you with all my heart.

May I find you
Always and everywhere –

In town
And country,

In sound
And silence,

In movement
And stillness,

In darkness
And light,

In company
And solitude,

In joy
And grief,

In life,
And in death.

Lord,
May I find you
Always and everywhere –

In the name
Of your dear Son.

Amen.

SILENCE

Silence

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him (Psalm 37:7; NIV).

Be silent before the LORD, all humanity (Zechariah 2:13; NLT).

Obey his commands, listen to his voice and cling to him (Deuteronomy 13:4; NLT).

What counts is whether we have been transformed into a new creation (Galatians 6:15; NLT).

Lord,
Waiting for you in silence
Is different every time…

Relaxing,
Restorative,
Or blissful;

Challenging,
Alarming,
Disturbing;

Inspiring,
Awesome –
Even revelatory;

For when you speak,
Our hearts
Are transformed,

And our lives
Turned
Upside down.

THE QUAKER MEETING

Hello to all readers. The context of this short reflection is that yesterday I attended my first Quaker Meeting for a long time, and found the friendly, tolerant silence a huge relief.

The Quaker Meeting

“For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them” (Matthew 18:20; NLT).

He said to Peter, “Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?” Matthew 26:40; NLT).

Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your God and serve only him’ ” (Luke 4:8; NLT).

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him (Psalm 37:7; NIV).

Be silent before the LORD, all humanity (Zechariah 2:13; NLT).

Lord,
Thank you
For this precious time
With Friends:
An hour to wait for you,
Watch with you,
And worship you –
In blesséd silence.

Amen.
