“ ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ ” (Mark 12:31; NLT).

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God (Ephesians 4:30; NIV).

Please help me to grasp
That when I hurt others
In body, mind, or soul,
I wound not only them,
And all humanity,
But you,
And even my own self.

“ ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ ” (Mark 12:31; NLT).

“Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us”  (Luke 11:4; NIV).

“But I say, love your enemies!” (Matthew 5:44; NLT).

“Pray for those who hurt you” (Luke 6:28; NLT).

When we can’t love those
Whose faith and ways
Are different from our own,
Please help us, at least,
To tolerate them.

And when we can’t even
Tolerate them,
Help us, at least,
To pray for them.

And when we can’t even
Pray for them,
Help us to remember
That we are the ones at fault –
Not them.

When I’m hungry

“Then the King will say to those on his right  […] I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me” (Matthew 25:34-6; NLT).

“Do to others as you would like them to do to you” (Luke 6:31; NLT).

When I’m hungry,
You feed me.

When I’m thirsty,
You give me drink.

When I’m a stranger,
You invite me in.

When I’m naked,
You clothe me.

When I’m sick,
You care for me;

And when I’m in prison,
You visit me.

Please help me
To do the same
For others.

In Jesus’ name,

“How frail is humanity! How short life is, how full of trouble!” (Job 14:1; NLT).

“But true wisdom and power are found in God; counsel and understanding are his” (Job 12:13; NLT).

Teach us to understand the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom (Psalm 90:12; NLT).

To acquire wisdom is to love oneself (Proverbs 19:8; NLT).

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you (James 1:5; NLT).

I’m so tired
Of living with chronic illness.

Please heal me in body and mind –
But if that’s not your will,
Help me to accept my limitations,
And to live within them wisely.

Through Jesus’ name,

He forgives all my sins (Psalm 103:3; NLT).

For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16; NLT).

With you,
Nothing is ever wasted –

We can learn
From each experience,
However bad,

And then move on again,
Assured of your forgiveness,
And your love.

Through Jesus’ name,

God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all (1 John 1:5; NLT).

“Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them?” declares the Lord. “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” declares the Lord (Jeremiah 23:24; NIV).

Sometimes, during contemplation,
Your light becomes so bright
That I’m afraid.

Then I pull the blankets
Over my head, and hide –
But you are with me in darkness,
Just as you are in light.

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him (Psalm 37:7).

Be silent before the Sovereign Lord (Zephaniah 1:7; NIV).

My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, LORD, I will seek (Psalm 27:8; NLT).

I’m not looking for a miracle,
Or the sound of heavenly choirs,
Or a vision of angels –

I just want to sit patiently,
In silence,
Listening for your voice,
And seeking your face.
