Quality versus quantity

Come close to God, and God will come close to you (James 4:8; NLT).

God [is] the source of all my joy (Psalm 43:4; NLT)

I am overwhelmed with joy in the Lord my God! (Isaiah 61:10; NLT).

Lord,
The quality of our lives
Is more important
Than the quantity –

And quality of life
Comes from the joy
Of staying close to you,
No matter what life brings.

Kindness

I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices (Hosea 6:6; NLT).

Show mercy and kindness to one another (Zecharaiah 7:9; NLT).

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-3; NRSV).

Lord,
What can our lives be worth
If we’re not kind?

No matter who, or what, we are,
Or how we look,
Or what we have,
Or even what we sacrifice –

What can our lives be worth
If we’re not kind?

Silent worship

Hello, everyone. Sorry, I pressed the wrong button, and tomorrow’s prayer flew off in an instant to join you, even though I hadn’t finished it properly!

Stand in silence in the presence of the Sovereign LORD (Zephaniah 1:7; NLT).

Be silent before the LORD, all humanity (Zechariah 2:13; NLT).

They will tremble in awe of the Lord and of his goodness! (Hosea 3:5; NLT).

Lord,
I worship you in silence,
For what words of mine
Could possibly express
Your goodness?

Spiritual darkness

Keep on seeking, and you will find (Matthew 7:7; NLT).

The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7; NIV).

For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face
(1 Corinthians 13:12; NRSV).

Father,
Even if I spend
My whole life
In spiritual darkness,

Never hearing your voice,
Or experiencing
Your presence,

I’ll keep on seeking you,
And trying to serve
Your kingdom,

Until I see you,
Face to face, at last,
Beyond my death.

Death and life

The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7; NIV).

God is love (1 John 4:16; NIV).

I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb (Jeremiah 1:5; NLT).

Lord,
At death, I’ll leave behind
My flesh and bones,

But my spirit will return
To you who gave it,

Merging with
Your oceanic love,

From which you brought me,
Long ago, to birth.

So tired

Come to me all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens (Matthew 11:28; NLT).

I am too distressed even to pray (Psalm 77:4; NLT).

The Spirit… intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words (Romans 8:26; NRSV).

Lord,
People are suffering all around me,
But I’m so tired and burdened
That I can’t even pray.

So, may your Holy Spirit
Intercede for them on my behalf,
With sighs too deep for words,

While I wait patiently on you,
In stillness,
And in silence.
