True forgiveness

When they came to a place called The Skull, they nailed him to the cross. And the criminals were also crucified – one on his right and one on his left. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing” (Luke 23:33-4; NLT).

True forgiveness
Means forgiving even those
Who don’t acknowledge
How much they have hurt us.

My dear brothers and sisters: you must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry (James 1:19; NLT).

Love your enemies (Matthew 5:44; NIV).

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone (Colossians 3:13; NIV).

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us (Luke 11:4; NLT).

Help me to be slow
To take offence.

Help me to love my enemies,
And pray for them –

For none of us
Is perfect,

And I, too, have hurt others
Many times.

So, may your words
Be always in my heart –

Forgive us our sins,
As we forgive those
Who sin against us.

During meditation

God shines in glorious radiance (Psalm 50:2; NLT).

He led them […] all night by a pillar of fire (Psalm 78:14; NLT).

He […] lavishes unfailing love on those who love him (Deuteronomy 7:9; NLT).

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you (Isaiah 26:3; NLT).

During meditation
I rejoice in your glorious light,
at your awesome fire,
Receive your unfailing love,
And share in your perfect peace.

Living in us all

There is […] one God and Father, who is over all and in all and living through all (Ephesians 4:5-6; NLT).

In him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28, NIV).

Thank you, Lord,
For living in us all –

Whether we hear you
Or not,

Whether we see you
Or not,

Whether we know you
Or not,

Whether we love you
Or not,

And whether we serve you
Or not.

For God alone my soul waits in silence (Psalm 62:1; ESV).

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength (Mark 12:30; NLT).

Whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17; NIV).

When words run out,
And only love remains,
Then contemplation
Reaches its true goal
Of union with you,
Almighty God.

Heart’s desire

He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die (Psalm 48:14; NLT).

He guards the lives of his faithful ones (Psalm 97:10; NIV).

The Lord is a friend to those who fear him (Psalm 25:14; NLT).

Our heart’s desire is to glorify your name (Isaiah 26:2; NLT).

Thank you for being
My guide
And guard,

My friend,
My mentor,
And my heart’s desire.

Life beyond my death

The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7; NIV).

God will redeem me from the world of the dead; he will surely take me to himself (Psalm 49:15; NIV).

You have brought me into your presence forever (Psalm 41:12; NLT).

Each meditation
Brings a taste
Of life beyond my death –

A little space
For union with you,
Where one day
I will dwell for evermore.
