Faith

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1; NLT).

Keep on seeking, and you will find (Matthew 7:7; NLT).

We are the temple of the living God (2 Corinthians 6:16; NLT).

……………………………………………

Lord,

Faith does not mean
Following lots of rules –

It means seeing you
In your created world,

Loving you
In everyone we meet,

And discovering you
Deep within ourselves.

Darkness

The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness (Psalm 18:28; NLT).

Speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ (Ephesians 4:15; NLT).

When completeness comes, what is in part disappears (1 Corinthians 13:10; NLT).

…………………………………………….

Lord,
I’ve always kept my shadow self
In darkness,

Shunning the thoughts
I’d rather not accept;

But now, I’m sharing
My whole self with you,

So these thoughts become the cure
That makes me whole.

Dry bones

If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me (Jeremiah 29:13-14; NLT).

He found them in a desert land, in an empty, howling wasteland (Deuteronomy 32:10; NLT).

He led me all around among the bones that covered the valley floor. They were scattered everywhere across the ground and were completely dried out (Ezekiel 37:2; NLT).

You are with me (Psalm 23:4; NIV).

……………………………………………………..

Lord,
I seek you out
In lonely desert sands,
Whilst wandering among
My own dry bones –
For you are here.

Your will be done

Your will be done (Matthew 6:10; NIV).

Our lives are in his hands (Psalm 66:9; NLT).

Wait patiently for him (Psalm 37:7; NIV).

Never stop praying (1 Thessalonians 5:17; NLT).

………………………………………………………………..

Lord God,

Sometimes I wish so much
I could be well again,

For life is passing me by
Day after day.

It seems so pointless, Lord,
Yet may your will be done;

So I rest in your hands,
And wait, and pray.

Closing my eyes

Clouds and thick darkness surround him (Psalm 97:2; NIV).

He loves us with unfailing love (Psalm 117:2; NLT).

You have brought me into your presence forever (Psalm 41:12; NLT).

Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them (1 John 4:16; NIV).

…………………………………………………..

Lord,
Closing my eyes,
I sink into the darkness
Of your womb.

Closing my eyes,
I sink into the stillness
Of your love.

Closing my eyes,
I sink into the silence
Of your presence.

Closing my eyes,
I sink into the vastness
Of your peace.

Many thanks to Jim Marion’s book “Putting on the mind of Christ” for helping me to put these experiences into words.

You hold us

The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms (Deuteronomy 33:27; NIV).

God speaks again and again, though people do not recognise it (Job 33:14; NLT).

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up (James 4:10; NIV).

He loves us with unfailing love (Psalm 117:2; NLT).

………………………………………………..

Lord,
You hold us in your arms,
But we don’t see you;

You talk to us each day,
But we don’t hear;

You lift us when we fall,
But we don’t thank you;

Yet you love us as we are –
Year after year.

Whole

You will be made complete with all the fulness of life and power that comes from God (Ephesians 3:19; NLT).

You […] are complete through your union with Christ (Colossians 2:10; NLT).

………………………………………………

Lord God,

Today, you showed me
I’m completely whole,

Because the less there is of me,
The more you give;

So you make up
For all of my deficiencies.

My shadow self

Speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ (Ephesians 4:15; NLT).

………………………………………………………………

Lord God,

As I begin to share
My shadow self
With you in prayer,

Thank you for helping me to face
The thoughts and feelings
I would rather not embrace.

May I glimpse you

There is […] one God and Father, who is over all and in all and living through all (Ephesians 4:5-6; NLT).

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge (Psalm 19:1-2; NIV).

In him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28, NIV).

The Lord is near (Genesis 28:16; NLT).

…………………………………………….

May I glimpse you
In all I see,

And know you, Lord,
In all I hear.

May I touch you
In all I meet,

And find you, Lord,
For you are near.

Completeness

I am nothing but dust and ashes (Genesis 18:27; NIV).

You […] are complete through your union with Christ (Colossians 2:10; NLT).

…………………………………

Lord God,
Alone, I’m nothing,
And I’m no-one:

Finite, weak
And sinful,
A lost cause.

But with you
I’m complete
And I am perfect:

Boundless, strong
And whole,
For evermore.
