Your timeless womb

I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb (Jeremiah 1:5; NLT).

God created human beings in his own image (Genesis 1:27; NLT).

How short is life! (Job 14:1; NLT).

The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7; NIV).

*******************************************

From the day we leave
Your timeless womb,
Lord God,

To start our finite lives
On this,
Your earth,

Each moment
Brings us closer
To our death,

When we return,
To merge again
With you.

  • … like the salmon which swim back upstream to the upper reaches of the river and spawn – the life cycle starts over. I don’t know if this makes sense, but it’s what immediately came to mind on reading your prayer-poem. X
