Closer

You’re closer than my flesh, Lord,
Closer than my mind;

Closer than my heart, Lord,
Closer than my soul;

Closer than my strength, Lord,
Closer than my breath;

Closer than my life, Lord,
Closer than my death.

Dry bones

If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me (Jeremiah 29:13-14; NLT).

He found them in a desert land, in an empty, howling wasteland (Deuteronomy 32:10; NLT).

He led me all around among the bones that covered the valley floor. They were scattered everywhere across the ground and were completely dried out (Ezekiel 37:2; NLT).

You are with me (Psalm 23:4; NIV).

Lord,
I seek you out
In lonely desert sands,
Whilst wandering among
My own dry bones –
For you are here.

Driving

How frail is humanity! How short is life, how full of trouble! (Job 14:1; NLT).

Lord,
Whenever I drive
My car,
Please help me
To remain aware

That I’m only
A thin-skinned bag
Of blood,
And bone,
And brain,

Propelling half a ton
Of glass,
And steel,
And unburnt fuel
At speed,

Amongst
My fellow travellers!

Dust to dust

He created the earth and everything in it (Isaiah 42:5; NLT).

There is one Lord …who is over all and in all and living through all (Ephesians 4:5-6; NLT).

Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground (Genesis 2:7; NLT).

“For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return” (Genesis 3:19; NLT).

For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7; NLT).

Jesus knew …that he had come from God and was returning to God (John 13:3; NIV).

Father,
You create the earth,
And everything in it.

You are over all,
And in all,
And you live through all.

You create us
From the dust
Of the ground.

You are over us,
And in us,
And you live through us.

When we die, our bones
Return to the earth
We came from,

But our souls
Return to you –
The God who gave them.

Selfishness and sin

Hello to every reader. This prayer came to me very unexpectedly yesterday morning, whist I was making breakfast. I wanted to convey the idea of asking to be so filled with God that my own selfishness and sin would be wholly replaced by his presence and love…

Selfishness and sin
* I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me (Galatians 2:20; NIV).
* No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us (1 John 4:12; NIV).
* If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God (1 John 4:15; NIV).

Living God,
Help me!

I’m full of selfishness
And sin.

Please come to live in me,
So I can live in you.

Fill me completely –
Soul and spirit,
Heart and mind,
Flesh and bone
And blood.

Then, you will flow through my veins each day,
Replacing all my selfishness and sin
With love.
