May there be no enemy breaking through our walls, no going into captivity, no cries of alarm in our town squares (Psalm 144:14; NLT).

Thank you so much
For the precious, hard-won boundaries
You’ve helped me to develop
As an adult.

May no enemy
Ever break through my walls.

May I never go back
Into captivity.

May no alarm bell
Shatter my peace of mind.

But, Lord, if my security
Should come under threat,
Please help me to defend it boldly,
And immediately.

Through Jesus’ name,

Toxic people

“Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us” (Luke 11:4; NIV).

“But I say, love your enemies!” (Matthew 5:44; NLT).

“Pray for those who hurt you” (Luke 6:28; NLT).

Please help me to keep my distance
From people who behave in toxic ways.

Remind me to maintain my boundaries,
Giving them no opportunity
To damage me again.

Help me to pray for them,
And to forgive them
For hurting me.

I ask all this
In Jesus’ name,

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’ s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; NLT).

The churning inside me never stops; days of suffering confront me (Job 30:27; NIV).

‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ (Mark 12; 31; NLT).

Thank you for my anxiety.

Even though it’s hard to bear,
I welcome it as a friend.

Help me to listen
To its warning voice,

And to learn
Everything it has to teach me –

About my boundaries,
My limitations,

And how I can protect myself
From further harm.

Through Jesus’ name,

But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!” (Matthew 14:27; NLT).

With your help I can advance against a troop, with my God I can scale a wall
(2 Samuel 22:30; NIV).

The God of Israel gives power and strength to his people (Psalm 68:35; NLT).

Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ (Ephesians 4:15; NLT).

Please give me
The courage and confidence I need
To assert my boundaries with others.

Help me to be honest
About my limits,
And choices.

Then I will be myself with everyone
Speaking the truth in love,
Without suppression,
Or fear.

I ask this in Jesus’ perfect name,

A counsellor’s prayer

A counsellor’s prayer

But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction (Job 36:15; NIV).

Speak the truth to each other (Zechariah 8:16; NIV).

The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love (Galatians 5:6; NIV).

Please help me
To build therapeutic relationships
With those who suffer.

Help me not to judge,
But to accept them as they are,
So they can slowly learn
To accept themselves more fully.

Help me not to advise,
But to listen;
Not to pretend, or conceal myself,
But to be open and honest,
So they experience
New ways of relating to others.

May I never collude
With those who believe they can do nothing
To help themselves,
Instead encouraging them
To explore the connections between
Their problems, thoughts, feelings,
Symptoms and behaviours,
So they can develop insight,
Change and grow.

Help me to maintain
My own boundaries,
To be aware of my limits and limitations,
To preserve confidentiality,
And to get help
When I am out of my depth.

Finally, Lord,
Please help me
Never to forget those who suffer,
But to pray for them every day.

In Jesus’ name,
