A holy faith

As you build yourselves up in your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting expectantly for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life (Jude 1:20-21; CSB).

We cannot build
A holy faith
By judging those
Who don’t behave like us.

We cannot build
A holy faith
By hating those
Who don’t agree with us.

We cannot build
A holy faith
By killing those
Who don’t share our beliefs.

We only build
A holy faith
By loving all our enemies,
And friends.

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else’ (Luke 18:11; NLT).

How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! (Matthew 7:4-5; NLT).

Then Peter replied, “I see very clearly that God shows no favouritism. In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right” (Acts 10:34-5; NLT).

Love your enemies! (Matthew 5:44; NLT).

You, too, must show love to foreigners (Deuteronomy 10:19; NLT).

Love ye therefore the stranger (Deuteronomy 10:19; KJV).

Love your neighbour as yourself (Mark 12:31; NLT).

Personality

The Lord is my strength and shield (Psalm 28:7; NLT).

He is my shield, and I take refuge in him (Psalm 144:2; NLT).

He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety (Psalm 18:2; NLT).

You, Lord, are a shield around me (Psalm 3:3; NLT).

Lord God,
The outward “personality”
I’ve built up
Since my childhood

Is nothing but a frail facade
That shields
My damaged core
As best it can.

Enlightenment

The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world (John 1:9; NRSV).

You will free the captives from prison, releasing those who sit in dark dungeons (Isaiah 42:7; NLT).

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed (John 8:36; NIV).

Lord,
Thank you that
Your Son came
To enlighten us –

Setting us free
To think for ourselves,
And make up our own minds;

Releasing us
To discover and explore you
For ourselves;

Encouraging us
To change and grow
Throughout our lives;

And helping each of us
To build o
ur own relationship
With you.
