Prayer, spiritual development, personal growth, faith, exploration, wholeness,

Each defeat

Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows (John 16:33; NLT).

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil (Matthew 4:1; NLT).

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me (Psalm 23:4; KJV).

With your help I can advance against a troop, with my God I can scale a wall (2 Samuel 22:30; NIV).

May each defeat,
Each loss, fear,
And affliction

Be a turning-point,
A challenge,
An adventure –

A chance to face
And overcome
My demons,

A chance to grow
In confidence,
With you.

Challenge and change

I am weary and worn out, O God (Proverbs 30:1; NLT).

I hate my life and don’t want to go on living (Job 7:16; NLT).

When I allow fatigue
To generate depressing thoughts,
I suffer.

Please help me
To be aware
Of my depressing thoughts,

So I can challenge
And change them,
Time after time.

When you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go (John 21:18; NLT).

Having to be dependent
Is a challenge,

Yet independence
Is no more than self-deception –

An illusion we indulge
When all is well!

You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food (Hebrews 5:12; NLT).

Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity (Hebrews 6:1; NIV).

Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ (Ephesians 4:15; NLT).

Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding (Hebrews 6:1; NLT).

Let us press on to know the LORD (Hosea 6:3; ESV).

When we cling to
Our elementary teachings
And beliefs,

Keeping them unquestioned
And unchallenged
For too long,

We arrest our spiritual development,
Preventing ourselves
From pressing on

To develop
A more mature relationship
With you.

Teach us to realise the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom (Psalm 90:12; NLT).

“I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!” (Matthew 25:40; NLT).

Grow to maturity (2 Corinthians 13:11; NLT).

You are so very good
To me:

You give me life,
A precious, short-term gift,

So I can learn
From all its challenges.

Help me to use my time
Both well and wisely,

By seeing you
In everyone I meet,

And growing in maturity
Each year.

“They suffer painfully; their life is full of trouble” (Job 14:22; NLT).

I know the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me (Psalm 16:8; 8; NLT).

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10; NLT).

Life is hard,
So we look for ways
Of trying to avoid
Our suffering –

And drugs;

Mindless entertainment,
Endless acquisition,
And promiscuity –
An endless list.

But, Lord,
If only we would face
Our challenges with you,
We could reduce
Our desperate need
For all these soul-destroying things,
And have life to the full –
No matter what it brings.
