Father and mother

Honour your father and mother (Exodus 20:12; NLT).

Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows (John 16:33; NLT).

Lord,
Thank you for my father,
And my mother;

For all I experienced in childhood –
Good and bad;

And for all the consequences
I’ve survived;

For all I’ve learned,
And all I’ve had to overcome.

Through Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Discarding God

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God” (Psalm 14:1; NIV).

The Lord looks down from heaven on the entire human race; he looks to see if anyone is truly wise, if anyone seeks God. But no, all have turned away; all have become corrupt. No one does good, not a single one! (Psalm 14:2-3; NLT).

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way (Isaiah 53:6; NIV).

Lord,
Discarding you
Has very serious
Consequences –

For our lives,
And our relationships,
Society,
And our world.

Free will

Don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil (1 Peter 2:16; NLT).

The Lord is our judge (Isaiah 33:22; KJV).

He will judge everyone according to what they have done (Romans 2:6; NLT).

Friends,
We have free will.

We can indulge
Our selfishness,
Anger,
Hatred,
And violence
To our hearts’ content –

God will not intervene.

But when we stand before him
After death,
Make no mistake:

We’ll face the consequence
Of every thought,
And word,
And deed
Before our judge.

IN JAIL

In jail

You will free the captives from prison, releasing those who sit in dark dungeons (Isaiah 42:7; NLT).

He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed (Isaiah 61:1; NLT).

…lead me along the path of everlasting life (Psalm 139:24; NLT).

Father,
We’re all prisoners,
One way and another.

The foundations of our jails
Are laid when we are young –
By physical, emotional,
And sexual abuse,
Or sheer neglect;

The walls are built
From all the ills
Of body, mind and soul
These toxic experiences cause;

And the locks are maintained
By their wider consequences –
Loneliness, stigma, poverty,
Broken relationships,
Unemployment,
Violence, hatred, and crime.

Lord,
Help us to reach out to one another
In our prison.
Show us the healing path to freedom,
And help us all to follow it –
With you.

GOD KNOWS

God knows

…he knows everything (1 John 3:20; NIV).

For the LORD is a God who knows what you have done (1 Samuel 2:3; NLT).

‘God have mercy on me, a sinner’ (Luke 18:13; NIV).

…and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us (Matthew 6:12; NLT).

Then the way you live will always honour and please the Lord, and your lives will produce much fruit (Colossians 1:10; NLT).

Lord,
You know everything
There is to know
About us.

Throughout our lives,
You know what others think of us,
What they say and do to us,
And what consequences flow.

You know what we think of others,
What we say and do to them,
And, again,
What consequences flow.

Have mercy on us –
Forgive our sins,
As we forgive those
Who sin against us.

Heal our lives –
Help us to learn from all that happens,
Good and bad,
So we can bear fruit for you, at last.

Children

Children

But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children” (Matthew 19:14; NLT).

“But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone hung around your neck” (Mark 9:42; NLT).

Father,
I pray for children everywhere
Who are abused,
Neglected,
Bullied,
Exploited,
And victimised.

Please heal the hearts
Of all who
Dominate and despoil
Young lives.

Protect these children’s
Minds and bodies,
So they will have a better future,
Despite the damaging long-term effects
Of all they experience.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
