Inner demons

Today’s prayer is a development from yesterday’s:

Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows (John 16:33; NLT).

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil (Matthew 4:1; NLT).

Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation (Matthew 26:41; NLT).

God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation (James 1:12; NLT).

****************************

Even you were tempted
By your inner demons, Lord –

The all-too-human urgings
Of your shadow –

So it’s no surprise
That we are tempted too.

Please help us
To endure temptation patiently;

To watch and pray,
So we will not give in;

For then we will become
Much more like you.

Symbols

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me (Psalm 23:4; NKJV).

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you (Isaiah 41:10; NLT).

Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow – not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love (Romans 8:38; NLT).

I am the LORD, who heals you (Exodus 15:26; NIV).

Lord,
We have monsters, ogres,
Dragons, witches,
And ghosts
Hiding in the darkness
Of our minds.

They emerge in our nightmares,
And in visions;
During contemplation;
When we’re drunk,
Or drugged,
And when we’re sick
In body,
Or in mind.

But when we meet
These symbols
Of our deepest fears,
Most painful memories,
And sharpest griefs,
We need not shrink from them –

For we can face and conquer
All our demons
If we tackle them with you –
The God who heals.

Dreams and nightmares

Hello, everyone. Like lots of people, when I’m dealing with significant emotional and psychological issues I often have disturbing dreams. Last night I dreamed I was walking along a street with my mother, saying firmly to her, “You usually yelled at someone on journeys.” She laughed heartily at this, as if I were joking. “That wasn’t a joke,” I continued, very seriously, “you did usually yell at someone on journeys.” As I surfaced into consciousness, still talking aloud, this left me wondering whether the fact that journeys with my mother were so incredibly tense and stressful had anything to do with the development of my agoraphobia.

Dreams and nightmares
* A dream comes when there are many cares (Ecclesiastes 5:3; NIV).
* “I have had a dream that troubles me and I want to know what it means” (Daniel 2:3; NIV).

Father,
Without dreams and nightmares,
Traumatic memories would fester
In my unconscious mind,
Generating panic attacks
That seem to strike
Out of the blue.

Instead,
Through dreams and nightmares
You help me
To confront my demons one by one,
Learning new ways to handle them,
And slowly coming to terms
With the past.
