Corruption

The Lord looks down from heaven on the entire human race; he looks to see if anyone is truly wise, if anyone seeks God. But no, all have turned away; all have become corrupt. No one does good, not a single one (Psalm 14:2-3; NLT).

“Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him (Matthew 9:9; NLT).

************************************

Lord,

Our corruption
And our hatred
Know no bounds,

So we truly have
The world
That we deserve.

Forgive us;
Heal us;
Rescue us, we pray;

And help us
To follow you,
So we may change.

We can’t deserve

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23; NIV).

We are the people he watches over, the flock under his care. If only you would listen to his voice today! (Psalm 95:7; NLT).

The Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion (Isaiah 30:18; NLT).

Lord,
We can’t “deserve”
Your help and care –

Yet you watch
Over us,

Wait
For us,

And love us
All –

How wonderful
You are!

Rewards and punishments?

Rewards and punishments?

About this time, Jesus was informed that Pilate had murdered some people from Galilee as they were offering sacrifices at the Temple. “Do you think those Galileans were worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee”? Jesus asked. “Is that why they suffered? Not at all!” (Luke 13:1-3; NLT).

The Lord gave me what I had, and the Lord has taken it away. Praise the name of the LORD (Job 1:21; NLT).

Should we accept only good from the hand of God, and never anything bad? (Job 2:10; NLT).

But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction (Job 36:15; NIV).

Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything (James 1:4; NIV).

Be thankful in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18; NLT).

Father,
We don’t deserve
The good things
That happen to us –
For they are not rewards;

Nor do we deserve
The bad ones –
For they are not punishments.

Instead,
You speak to us through both,
Giving us the opportunities we need
To reach maturity.

Lord,
Thank you for everything
That happens to us –
Good and bad.
May we always be prepared
To learn from both.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Writing

Writing

“Here I am” (1 Samuel:3:4; NIV).

“O Lord, please leave me – I’m too much of a sinner to be around you” (Luke 5:8; NLT).

“Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you” (Luke 7:6-7; NLT).

“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:9; NIV).

…and after the fire, a still small voice (1 Kings 19:12; KJV).

Lord,
Here I am, in contemplation,
Overwhelmed by your presence,
And afraid.

Part of me wants to say:
“Lord, leave me! I’m a sinner,
And I don’t deserve to be near you.”

But a braver part of me says:
“Speak, Lord,
For your servant is listening.”

Then I write down
What you teach me,
As best I can.

Too much

Too much

Look now; I myself am he! There is no other god but me! I am the one who kills and gives life; I am the one who wounds and heals; no one can be rescued from my powerful hand! (Deuteronomy 32:39; NLT).

I am not worthy of all the unfailing love and faithfulness you have shown to me, your servant (Genesis 32:10; NLT).

Come near to God and he will come near to you (James 4:8; NIV).

As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by (Exodus 33; 22; NLT).

Father,
You’re far too much for me –
Too big,
Too overwhelming,
And too strong!

I’m just a weak
And sinful soul –
I don’t deserve
To have you near.

Please shield me
From your awesome power,
And hide me
Till you have passed by;

For I’m afraid
When you draw close
To listen to my prayers,
And speak to me.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Prayer

“O LORD,” I prayed, “have mercy on me. Heal me, for I have sinned against you”
(Psalm 41:4; NLT).

“If only you would prepare your heart and lift up your hands to him in prayer!”
(Job 11:13; NLT).

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love (Ephesians 5:1-2; NIV).

Father,
I’m a sinner.

It’s a privilege
To pray to you,
And I know
I don’t deserve it.

Help me to prepare my heart,
Lifting my hands to you in prayer
As I try again
To walk in your way of love.

For Jesus’ sake,
Amen.
