solitude, silence, stillness, darkness, contemplation, prayer,

The stillness we avoid
Is full of movement.

The darkness we eschew
Is full of light.

The silence we evade
Is full of music.

The solitude we shun
Is full of you.

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him (Psalm 37:7; NIV).

The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness (Psalm 18:28; NLT).

Be silent before the Sovereign Lord (Zephaniah 1:7; NIV).

Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed (Luke 5:16; NIV).

Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it (Genesis 28:16; NIV).

He has known your walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the Lord your God has been with you (Deuteronomy 2:7; HNV).

Prayer, suffering, life, courage, help, bear, illness, mental, physical,

The darkness we avoid
Is full of light, Lord.

The desert we reject
Is full of dew.

The suffering we fear
Is full of peace, Lord.

The wilderness we dread
Is full of you.

The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness (Psalm 18:28; NLT).

Your strength will be renewed each day like the morning dew (Psalm 110:3; NLT).

In me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world (John 16:33; CSB).

The pastures of the wilderness are again green with grass (Joel 2:22; NET).

He left in a boat to a remote are to be alone (Matthew 14:13; NLT).

Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it (Genesis 28:16; NIV).

When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things (1 Corinthians 13:11; NLT).

What can mere mortals do to me? (Psalm 56:4; NLT).

My mind sees what it used to see,
In childhood.

My heart fears what it used to fear,
Back then.

But that was many years ago;
Now, I’m full-grown.

I can speak out, apologise,

Please help my weary mind to grasp
That life has changed,

So I no longer need to dread
What others say.

Ups and downs

To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1; KJV).

Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble? (Job 2:10; NIV).

Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows (John 16:33; NLT).

Thank you for the ups and downs
Of life –

For all my brightest days,
And darkest nights;

The times of deep depression,
And of joy;

Of dread, and bliss,
Of ecstasy, and grief.

Thank you for that all I experience,
Good and bad,

For these things help to make me
Who I am.

You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day (Deuteronomy 28:66; NIV).

The churning inside me never stops; days of suffering confront me (Job 30:27; NIV).

The peace I give is a gift the world cannot give (John 14:27; NLT).

I lived with chaos as a child –
But that was normal;

I lived with rage –
And that was normal, too.

I lived with condemnation –
That was normal;

And I lived with dread –
And that was normal, too.

Now, I no longer live with chaos,
Rage, and condemnation,

But still can’t overcome
My constant dread.

Please heal me, Lord,
And bless me with the gift
This world can never give –
Your inner peace.

The Lord your God is a devouring fire (Deuteronomy 4:24; NLT).

You will free the captives from prison, releasing those who sit in dark dungeons (Isaiah 42:7; NLT).

I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly (John 10:10; NRSV).

You are a devouring fire.

Please incinerate
My childhood sense of dread,

And set me free
From hell on earth,

To have
Abundant life.

Facing fears

Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking (Psalm 55:5; NLT).

O Most High, when I am afraid, I put my trust in you (Psalm 56:2-3; NRSV).

You will be strong and free of fear (Job 11:15; NLT).

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10; NLT).

When we avoid
Feared situations,
And people,
We feel relieved.

But that short-term relief
Rewards avoidance,
Making us more likely
To avoid our fears again,
The next time
They arise.

And, in the longer term,
The more we avoid,
The more our fears
Will grow and multiply,
Until they dominate
Our lives.

Please help us, bit by bit,
To face and conquer
Everything we dread, with you,
For then we will have life,
As you intend,
And have it to the full.

Through Jesus’ name,
