Empty me

Empty me, Father,
And fill me with Christ,

So I will be ready
For each sacrifice.

Empty me, Father,
And fill me with prayer,

So I will be ready
To give, and to care.

Empty me, Father,
And fill me with love,

So I will be ready
For heaven above.

Empty me, Father,
And fill me with grace,

So I will be ready
To gaze on your face.

Christ lives within you (Romans 8:10; NLT).

God is love (1 John 4:16; NIV).

My grace is all you need (2 Corinthians 12:9; NLT).

The Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words (Romans 8:26; RSV).

Now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face (1 Corinthians 13:12; NRSV).

Prayer, suffering, life, courage, help, bear, illness, mental, physical,

I’m empty

No one can receive anything unless God gives it from heaven (John 3:27; NLT).

God gives rest to his loved ones (Psalm 127:2; NLT).

God gives […] joy to those who please him (Ecclesiastes 2:26; NLT).

You will also share in the comfort God gives us (2 Corinthians 1:7; NLT).

He loves us with unfailing love (Psalm 117:2; NLT).

I’m empty, Lord –
Restore my bones
With rest.

I’m empty, Lord –
Relieve my mind
With joy.

I’m empty, Lord –
Revive my heart
With comfort.

I’m empty, Lord –
Refill my soul
With love.

You are all

My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9; NLT).

I am nothing but dust and ashes (Genesis 18:27; NIV).

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End (Revelation 22:13, NLT).

I can be just as I am
With you,
And that’s okay.

I can be empty, Lord,
And you don’t mind.

I can be weak,
For you work best
Through weakness.

And I can be nothing, Lord,
For you are all.

Let go

Well, after the amazing spiritual high I wrote about yesterday, today has been something of an anti-climax, which perhaps isn’t very surprising. I feel exhausted, empty and dispirited, entirely devoid of inspiration.

However, I still have a few unpublished prayers in hand, so after a lot of thought, I’ve decided to continue posting until everything suitable has been used. If no fresh insights have come to me by then, I will have to bring this blogsite to a close, either for a while, or permanently. This prospect makes me very sad, but if it happens, I will have to accept it.

Anyway, for the moment, here is a short prayer I wrote some weeks ago:

Please help me
To let go
Again and again
Of longing
To be different
From how I am.

The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised (Job 1:21; NIV).

Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble? (Job 2:10; NIV).

Open our eyes

He created the earth and everything in it (Isaiah 42:5; NLT).

The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship (Psalm 19:1; NLT).

“Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth?” says the Lord (Jeremiah 23:24; NLT).

You are the temple of the living God (Luke 17:21; NKJV).

When we close our eyes
To your presence
In all you have created,
Our lives become pointless,
And depressing.

Please open our eyes
To see you in the world,
In everyone we meet,
And even in ourselves.

Far, near, and everywhere

“Am I a God who is only close at hand?” says the LORD. “No, I am far away at the same time. […]  Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth?” (Jeremiah 23:23-4; NLT).

On the days
When you seem far away
I reach out to you
Across a vast and empty space
As best I can;

And on the days
When you seem near,
I reach in to you,
Deep within my heart and soul
As best I can;

For you are far away,
And near,
Within, without –
And everywhere.
