Exile (Isaiah 9:1-7; NRSV).

Lord,

I spent my early years
In bondage;
My teens and twenties
Trying to escape.

My thirties in the desert
Of depression;
My anxious forties
In a pathless waste.

My fifties brought me
To your promised freedom,
A land where I could start
To change and grow.

My sixties came with sickness,
Loss, restriction,
Yet love and joy at last
Began to flow.

How many years remain?
I cannot guess, Lord.
At present, I have time
And space to pray –

No longer far from you,
Condemned to exile,
I dwell in you, and you in me,
Each day.

One with you

Lord,
We’re one with you
Before our birth —

One light with you;
One truth; one peace;
One love.

We thirst for you
In exile,
Here on earth;

Then reunite
With you,
In heaven above.

I’m an outpost

I’m an outpost for the Father,
Here, in exile, on the earth.

I’m a cattle-stall for Mary,
Crying out, as I give birth.

I’m a lodging-place for Jesus,
Slowly growing like God’s Son.

I’m a temple for the Spirit,
Thanking him for all he’s done.

You share our earthly life

Lord,
You share
Our earthly life,

With all its richness,
Suffering,
And pain.

Please help us
As we wander here
In exile, and in strife;

Please help us, Lord,
Till we see you
Again.

In this world we are like Jesus (1John 4:17; NIV).

Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross (Philippians 2:6-8; NLT).

In all their suffering he also suffered (Isaiah 63:9; NLT).

Here in exile my heart is breaking (Psalm 42:6; GNT).

Dust

Lord,

You make us all from dust;
You know how weak we are.

You send us into exile here,
And watch us from afar.

Lord,

You make us all from dust;
To dust we all return.

Then our souls reunite with you,
The One for whom we yearn.

Gethsemane’s deep anguish,

And walk the lonely shadows
