Buying stuff

Why does it take
So long
For us to learn
That buying stuff
Cannot bring
Lasting happiness?

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven […] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also (Matthew 6:19-21; NIV).

Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions (Luke 12:15; NRSV).

Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? (Matthew 6:25; NIV).

How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver! (Proverbs 16:16; NLT).

Depression and anxiety

I will make a pathway through the wilderness (Isaiah 43:19; NLT).

Even the hard pathways overflow with abundance (Psalm 65:11; NLT).

I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb (Jeremiah 1:5; NLT).

I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly (John 10:10; NRSV).

Life is hard –
Depression and anxiety
Still dominate my days.

Please help me as I choose
To change my thinking,
Forming new pathways
In my weary mind,

So I can re-connect
With all the peace
And happiness
You gave me

Long before you formed me
In my mother’s womb –

Then I will have
Abundant life,
At last.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:28; NKJV).

“…all of you are equal as brothers and sisters” (Matthew 23:8; NLT).

O LORD my God […] You have no equal (Psalm 40:5; NLT).

In our relationships
There can be
No happiness,
Or peace,
Or love,
Without equality –

Except in our relationship
With you.

Life is not measured by how much you own” (Luke 12:15; NLT).

People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7; NLT).

The LORD gave me what I had, and the LORD has taken it away. Praise the name of the LORD!” (Job 1:21; NLT).

“Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God” (Luke 12:21; NLT).

Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found (Psalm 119:35; NLT).

Please help me
Not be fooled
Into believing
That happiness depends
On my relationships,
Or state of health;

For sooner or later
Everything I think is mine
Will be taken from me,
Except my soul –
And you.

My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him (Psalm 28: 7; NIV).

He [Jesus] is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie
(John 1:27; NIV).

The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing (Zephaniah 3:17; NIV).

I’m bursting with happiness
Because you love me unconditionally,
Even though I’m entirely unworthy
Of your delight.

Praise the LORD, my soul; all my inmost being praise his holy name. Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits – who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s (Psalm 103:2-5; NIV).

I’m so happy!

For the first time ever
There is nothing
I need to ask for.

Please prepare me
To serve you,
And help me to do your will.

In Jesus’ name

Happy relationships

Hello, readers. Today’s blog is more of a meditation than a prayer. It’s a musing on our expectations of others, and on what makes relationships work well.

Secrets of happiness

  • “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry
    (Ephesians 4:26; NIV).
  • “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good – except God alone”
    (Luke 18:19; NIV).

The secret of a happy relationship
Is to appreciate the good things
About your partner,
Praising them for their achievements
And thanking them for every kindness.

When you hurt your partner,
Apologise immediately,
Admitting your fault in full,
And asking their forgiveness.

When your partner hurts you,
Be honest and direct with them,
Speaking the truth with love.

Be sure to talk your anger through,
Resolving it before the sun goes down,
And forgiving quickly.

Always remember that your partner isn’t perfect,
Any more than you are perfect.

Strive to accept them as they are
For no one can give you
Everything you want,
And it’s not their responsibility
To fulfil all your expectations.

Be mindful that your partner has
Thoughts, desires and opinions,
Hopes and fears,
Strengths and weaknesses of their own –
Just as you do.

So celebrate your differences,
And support each other,
For as long as your lives come together.
