Oneness

Lord,

We know that after death
All souls are one with you,
And yet we fail to grasp that here, in life,
The same is true.

So how can we hate others, Lord,
Ignore, exploit, condemn,
When they are one with us, and we, like you,
Are one with them?

When we look down on others, Lord,
And try to shut them out,
This proves we do not love ourselves,
Whatever words we spout.

All concepts of me, us and them,
Are ignorant and blind,
For we are one with you, Lord God,
And with all humankind.

Forgive us, Lord; we are ashamed.
Please cleanse us with your blood;
And help us all to follow you,
By offering your love.

God’s image

So God created human beings in his own image (Genesis 1:27; NLT).

Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48; NIV).

The LORD looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one (Psalm 14:2-4; NIV).

You are the God who sees me (Genesis 16:13; NIV).

Heavenly Father,
You made us
In your image,
To be perfect –
Just like you.

Yet with every passing day
We choose to be
More selfish,
Coarse,
And brutish;

More ignorant,
Exploitative,
And greedy;

More sinful,
Violent,
And corrupt.

How must you feel, Lord,
As you watch us
Growing ever less like you?

ONE GOD

One God

There is only one God (Romans 3:30; NLT).

Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror (1 Corinthians 13:12; NLT).

But these oppressors know nothing; they are so ignorant! (Psalm 82:5; NLT).

The LORD looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. Do all these evildoers know nothing? (Psalm 14:2-4; NIV).

For the leaders of my people – the LORD’S watchmen, his shepherds, – are blind and ignorant (Isaiah 56:10; NLT).

Love your neighbour as yourself (Matthew 19:18; NLT).

But anyone who does not love does not know God – for God is love. (1 John 4:8; NLT).

Father,
You are the only God,
But, making you in our own image,
We misconstrue you
In our many different ways.

Then, being ignorant and foolish,
We argue over who is right,
Determined to impose our views
On those we think are wrong –
Even if that means using force.

Meanwhile, you look on,
Grieved beyond measure
By our wilful blindness,
Cruelty, and violence;

For when we fail to love
Others as ourselves,
We show them that
We don’t know you at all
As you are Love.

One God

One God

There is no one like you, and there is no God but you (2 Samuel 7:22; NIV).

“The LORD our God is the one and only LORD” (Mark 12:29; NLT).

Your name is holy! (Psalm 99:3; NLT).

“I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14; NLT).

Lord,
We grope towards you,
Blinded by our ignorance –

We understand you
In different ways;

We cry out to you
With different names;

And we seek you
By different paths.

Yet you are
The one and only Lord.

There is no God
But you.

You are who you are,
And holy is your name.

Reading the Bible

Reading the Bible

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16; NIV).

Don’t forget my words or turn away from them (Proverbs 4:5; NLT).

Jesus replied, “But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice (Luke 11:28; NLT).

Holy Spirit,
I’m sorry to be
So ignorant
About the Bible,
Slowly wading through it,
Then forgetting
Most of what I read.

Please help me
To remember,
And to practice,
What I learn
Through studying
God’s Word.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Service

Service

“Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me”
(Matthew 10:38; NIV).

“Whoever serves me must follow me” (John 12:26; NIV).

Father,
You know how sinful,
Weak,
Ignorant
And foolish I am.

Please show me your will,
Equip me to serve you,
And help me to follow your Son
To the very best of my ability.

In his holy name,
Amen.
