I am content

Lord,
I am content
With what you send.

Health and illness
Both flow from your hand;

Poverty and plenty
From above –

You know what I need,
For you are love.

Lord,
I am content
With what you give.

Joy and grief
Are lessons I must live;

Disaster, healing touch,
Smooth path, or rough –

You know what I need,
And that’s enough.

Lord,
I am content
With what you grant.

May I learn to face
What you command;

For you, Lord, suffer with me,
Like your Son,

And you know what I need –
Your will be done.

Pain

Lord, I’ve got a migraine, yet again…

Pain for the sake of pain
Can seem so pointless,

Yet illness may be borne
In different ways:

With anger, deep resentment,
Or self-pity;

With patience, peace, acceptance –
Even praise.

So, may I suffer willingly,
As you did,

For sickness
Is a sacred invitation

To bear my cross
While pleading, Lord, for others,

And pray for them,
While sharing in their pain.

Pointless

Father,

It is pointless
To resent, or hate,
Our illness,

For anger
Will not make it
Go away.

Instead,
Help us to live
With how we are,

To manage,
And to learn
From it,

Making the best
We can
Of every day.

Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity (Hebrews 6:1; NIV).

I was given a thorn in my flesh […] Three times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:7-9; NLT).

Illusion

Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows (John 16:33; NLT).

As no one has power over the wind to contain it, so no one has power over the time of their death (Ecclesiastes 8:8; NIV).

Lord,
We can’t control
The realities of illness,
Disappointment,

Sorrow,
Loss,
And death,

Although we like
To think we can,
When life goes well.

Help us let go
Of our futile yearning
For control,

As thinking
We control our lives
Is an illusion.

Illness

Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying  (Romans 12:12; NLT).

Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad? (Job 2:10; NLT).

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me (Psalm 23:4; KJV).

Lord,
Please help me
To face my illness

Not with fear,
Or bitterness,

Self-pity,
Or resentment,

Denial,
Or frustration,

But with patient, calm acceptance –
And with you.
