No limit

“Lord, how many times shall I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?” “No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven!” (Matthew 18:21-2; NLT).

Love your enemies (Matthew 5:44; NIV).

How many times
Should I forgive
All those who hurt me?

Not seven times,
Nor seventy-seven times;
Not even seventy times seven!

For there’s no limit
To forgiveness,
Or to love.

Turn the other cheek

Forgive anyone who offends you (Colossians 3:13; NLT).

Love your enemies! Do good to them (Luke 6:35; NLT).

Pray for those who hurt you. (Luke 6:28; NLT).

Do not resist an evil person. If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also (Matthew 5:39; NLT).

Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone (Leviticus 19:18; NIV).

Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing (Luke 23:34; NLT).

You taught me to forgive
All those who hurt me,
Even when they don’t apologise.

Then you showed me
How to pray for them,
And love them,
For they do not understand
The harm they’ve done.

Now, you want me
To turn the other cheek,
Neither chiding,
Nor avoiding,
Those who hurt me;

And this step
Is the hardest of them all, Lord –
Just as it was for you,
Upon the cross.

If I return

Only in returning to me […] will you be saved (Isaiah 30:15; NLT).

If I return to you, Lord,
Will you return to me?

If I believe in you, Lord,
Will you believe in me?

If I speak truth to you, Lord,
Will you speak truth to me?

If I have faith in you, Lord,
Will you have faith in me?

If I dwell in your presence,
Will you, Lord, dwell in me?

And if I say I love you,
Will you say you love me?

Hurt is inevitable

If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone (Matthew 18:15; NRSV).

So then, putting away all falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbours, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do not sin (Ephesians 4:25-6; NRSV).

We will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ (Ephesians 4:15; NLT).

In all relationships
And groups,
Hurt is inevitable.

What counts
Is how we handle it
When it occurs.

We have two choices:

We can face,
And resolve each issue
As it arises,
Then move forward
With a better understanding
Of one another;

We can allow the hurts
To build up,
And unresolved,
Until the relationship concerned
Breaks down completely –

The choice is ours.

Closer to death

How frail is humanity! How short is life, how full of trouble! (Job 14:1; NLT).

Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts (Psalm 90:12; CSB).

You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind (Luke 10:27; NLT).

Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them (Romans 12.9; NLT).

We draw closer to death
Each precious day.

Help us to make
The best use
Of our time,

So we may grow
In love for you,
And all.
