You are a light

I am the light of the world (John 8:12; NLT).

She […] laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn (Luke 2:7; NLT).

After the fire a still small voice (1 Kings 19:12; KJV).

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Mark 15:34; NLT).

***************************************

Lord,

You are a light,
A dove in flight,
A crown of gold;

A squalid byre,
A tongue of fire,
A love untold;

A still, small voice,
A daily choice,
A healing breath;

A cry of pain,
A Saviour slain,
A bitter death.

I can love you

Lord,

I can love you
Only to the extent
That I love others;

And I can love others
Only to the extent
That I love you.

You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength (Mark 12:30; NLT).

Love your neighbour as yourself (Mark 12:31; NLT).

Love ye therefore the stranger (Deuteronomy 10:19; KJV).

You, too, must show love to foreigners (Deuteronomy 10:19; NLT).

My lips say I forgive

Whilst listening to a radio play called Home Front, one character said something that suggested the beginning of this prayer to me, so I’m very grateful to the writer for their inspiration.

************************************************

Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others (Colossians 3:13; NLT).

Do not nurse hatred in your heart (Leviticus 19:17; NLT).

Forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart (Matthew 18:35; NLT).

***************************

Lord,

My lips say
I forgive all those
Who hurt me,

But my mind knows
It needs longer
To catch up.

My mind says
I forgive all those
Who hurt me;

But my heart knows
It needs longer
To catch up.

My heart says
I forgive all those
Who hurt me;

But my soul knows
It needs longer,
To catch up.

The struggle to forgive

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us (Luke 11:4; NLT).

With the measure you use, it will be measured to you (Luke 6:38; NIV).

If you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you (James 2:13; NLT).

Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others (Colossians 3:13; NLT).

Stay close

Lord of all creation,
Lord of all temptation;

Lord of golden light,
Lord of darkest night;

Lord of life and breath,
Lord of brutal death;

Lord, whom we betray,
Stay close to us today.

God created everything through him (John 1:3; NLT).

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted (Matthew 4:1; NLT).

He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun (Matthew 17:2; NIV).

He was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood (Luke 22:44; NLT).

The Saviour – yes, the Messiah, the Lord – has been born today in Bethlehem (Luke 2:11; NLT).

Then the soldiers nailed him to the cross (Mark 15:24; NLT).

Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them (John 18:5; NLT).

Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me (Psalm 23:4; KJV).
