Your way

When there’s something
Nagging at my mind, Lord,
May I stop to think
What I might do,

Being clear and honest
With myself, Lord,
And sharing every part of it
With you.

Once we’ve talked it over
May I act, Lord,
Sorting out my problem
In your way,

Then, I’ll share your joy
And peace of mind, Lord,
By growing more and more like you
Each day.

To love you

Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another (1 John 4:11; NIV).

Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them (Romans 12.9; NLT).

Love your neighbour as yourself (James 2:8; NLT).

To love you
Is to cherish
Other people, Lord.

To love you
Is to care
How others feel.

To love you
Is to listen
To their problems.

To love you
Is to help them
Grow and heal.

Self-protection

How frail is humanity! How short is life, how full of trouble! (Job 14:1; NLT).

God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us (2 Corinthians 1:3-4; NLT).

Love your neighbour as yourself (Matthew 19:19; NLT).

Lord,
Everyone has problems.

Some are willing to work
On personal change.

I can support them
As they grieve,
Accept,
And adapt to
Their new reality.

But others
Don’t want to change.

They only want
To complain bitterly
About what they’ve lost,
Revelling in self-pity
And resentment.

Their company
Is toxic.

Their behaviour
Makes me very anxious,
Ringing all my warning bells
From childhood.

So I stay away from them,
Because I must protect myself,
By listening to my body,
And remembering
My own deep-rooted limitations.

EVERYTHING I NEED

Everything I need

We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance (Romans 5:3; NLT).

As soon as I pray, you answer me; you encourage me by giving me strength (Psalm 138:3; NLT).

“To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given” (Matthew 13:12; NLT).

We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love (1 John 4:16; NLT).

Lord,
Thank you for giving me
Everything I need in life –

All the trials I need,
All the strength I need,
All the lessons I need,
And all the love I need.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Surfing

Surfing

Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me (Psalm 42:7; NIV).

The mighty waters engulfed me; I was buried beneath your wild and stormy waves (Jonah 2:3; NLT).

But mightier than the violent raging of the seas, mightier than the breakers on the shore – the LORD above is mightier than these (Psalm 93:4; NLT).

Kings will stand speechless in his presence (Isaiah 52:15; NLT).

Lord,
In contemplation,
I surf my breathing.

Again and again,
I try to catch a wave
And ride it towards you;
But a sea of problems
Swamps me,
Dragging me down
Into the depths.

Yet,
From time to time,
The surge lifts me up,
Sweeping me effortlessly
Into your presence,
And dropping me at your feet,
Where I am lost for words.
