You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32; NLT).

I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly (John 10:10; NRSV).

Be sure of this: I am with you always (Matthew 28:20; NLT).

Help me to face the truth
About myself –

For you have promised
That the truth will set me free,

To have abundant life
With you.

Unconditional love

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1; NLT).

For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16; NLT).

He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases (Psalm 103:3; NLT).

And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us (Acts 2:33; NLT).

The LORD looks down from heaven on the entire human race; he looks to see if anyone is truly wise, if anyone seeks God. But no, all have turned away; all have become corrupt (Psalm 14:2-3; NIV).

You made the world,
And gave us your Son.
You forgive our sins,
And heal our wounds.
You pour out your Spirit,
And offer us eternal life.

What’s more –
You do all this
Despite knowing
Exactly how we behave
Towards each other,
And towards you.

That’s what I call
Unconditional love!

Prayer of thanks

Prayer of thanks

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16; NIV).

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins (1 John 4:10; NIV).

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever – the Spirit of truth (John 14:16-17; NIV).

Threefold Father,
Thank you for making us,
Loving us,
And welcoming our prayers.

Thank you for your Son,
Who lived and died for us
So our sins can be forgiven
When we repent.

Thank you for sending your Holy Spirit
To be our advocate,
To help us through each day,
And be with us forever.

Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
Thank you for the promise
Of eternal life with you.
In Jesus’ name,

Resisting temptation

Hello, everyone. Normally, I never eat between meals, but last night I felt tired and down. I knew there were salted nuts in the kitchen, and wanted some comfort food. I got up to fetch them, feeling weak, because I knew perfectly well that I wasn’t actually hungry, and didn’t need any more calories.

However, just before reaching the kitchen I was suddenly struck by the insight encapsulated in today’s prayer. The end of the story is that I didn’t eat any nuts, of course. Later, I also realised that this “promise” approach can be used with any and every kind of temptation, not just food…

Resisting temptation
*  No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it (1 Corinthians 10:13; NIV).
*  So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh (Galatians 5:16; NIV).
*  This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us (1 John 5:14; NIV).
*  You are the God who sees me (Genesis 6:13; NIV).

Thank you for showing me
That when I’m feeling tempted
I can turn to you,
Ask you for the strength to resist,
And promise you I won’t give in.

That’s a promise I won’t dare to break,
Because it’s made to you,
All-powerful God,
The One who hears –
And sees!
