Prayer

The only way

Love your neighbour as yourself (James 2:8; NLT).

To acquire wisdom is to love oneself (Proverbs 19:8; NLT).

Lord,
The only way
To understand and love
Our neighbours
Is first to understand and love
Ourselves,
Then to reach out to them –
And start to learn!

Union

He is right beside me (Psalm 16:8; NLT).

Keep on seeking, and you will find (Matthew 7:7; NLT).

Stretch out your hands to him (Job 11:13; NLT).

Whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17; NIV).

Lord,
You walk beside us all,
Stretching out your hand
To offer union with you.

But we’re too busy with our lives
To notice you;
So we never see you waiting patiently,
Nor do we seek your company.

Instead, we complain
That you seem far away,
Insist you’re dead,
Or claim you don’t exist.

But if we reach out
To join our hands with yours,
You will guide us towards union
With you.

Far away

Far away

O LORD, why do you stand so far away? (Psalm 10:1; NLT).

We look for light, but all is darkness; for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows (Isaiah 59:9; NLT).

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life” (John 8:12; NLT).

Father,
You seem so very far away.

I seek you
Again and again
In contemplation,

But I can’t see your light,
Or hear your voice,
Or reach your hand.

Please help me to follow your Son,
On this dark and lonely stretch
Of the path.

In his precious name,
Amen.

Have mercy

Have mercy

Hear my prayer, O Lord! Listen to my cries for help! (Psalm 39:12; NLT).

Each day I beg for your help, O LORD; I lift my hands to you for mercy (Psalm 88:9; NLT).

God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us (Acts 17:27; NIV).

She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed” (Matthew 9:21; NIV).
Lord,
Have mercy on me!
Hear my prayer,
And listen to my cry for help!

I seek you day and night,
Lifting up my hands to you,
Reaching out
To touch the hem of your robe,
Begging for your healing
And forgiveness.

Lord,
Have mercy on me!
Hear my prayer,
And listen to my cry for help!

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Contemplation

“Be still and know that I am God!” (Psalm 46:10; NLT).

Be silent before the LORD, all humanity (Zechariah 2:13; NLT).

“My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed (John 20:28; NLT).

Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your God and serve only him” (Luke 4:8; NLT).

Father,
Again and again
I try to put my thoughts aside
So I can concentrate on you.

But it’s hard
To clear my mind
Of all my worries.

Help me to reach out to you,
My Lord and my God,
For you alone
Will I worship and serve.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
