CONTEMPLATION

Contemplation

He restores my soul (Psalm 23:3; NKJV).

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10; NIV).

Be silent before the Sovereign LORD (Zephaniah 1:7; NIV).

But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17; NIV).

Lord,
In contemplation,
You revive my strength;

In stillness,
You refresh my mind;

In silence,
You restore my heart;

And in union,
You renew my soul.

Empty and full

Empty and full

Remember how short my life is, how empty and futile this human existence!
(Psalm 89:47; NLT).

But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint
(Isaiah 40:31; NLT).

Lord,
Until a few weeks ago,
I used to call
The way I feel
When I’m tired and drained
Depressed.

Then, as time passed,
Self-pitying
Seemed more accurate.

Next, I recognised that
Flat
Was even better.

But now I know that
Empty
Is the perfect word.

Lord,
When I’m empty,
Help me to be patient –
Trusting in you,
And resting quietly,
While you fill me with new strength.

Then I will soar like an eagle again,
Run without weariness,
Walk, and not faint.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

…he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep (Psalm 121:5; NIV).

But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction (Job 36:15; NIV).

Praise the LORD, my soul; all my inmost being praise his holy name. Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits – who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion (Psalm 103:2-4; NIV).

…be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12.2; NIV).

All my springs are in you (Psalm 87:7; NRSV).

God has delivered me from going down to the pit, and I shall live to enjoy the light of life (Job 33:28; NIV).

I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living (Psalm 27:13; NIV).

Father,
You watch over me constantly,
And speak to me through affliction.

You forgive my sins,
Heal my diseases,
And redeem my life from the pit.

You crown me with love
And compassion.

You transform me
By the renewing of my mind.

You are the fountain of life,
And all my springs
Are in you.

Thank you for showing me
Your goodness,
So I can enjoy the light of life.

In Jesus’ holy name,
Amen.

With your help I can advance against a troop, with my God I can scale a wall (2 Samuel 22:30).

…those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint (Isaiah 40:31; NIV).

The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread the heights (Habakkuk 3:19; NIV).

…be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12.2; NIV).

All my springs are in you (Psalm 87:7; NRSV).

God has delivered me from going down to the pit (Job 33:28; NIV).

Father,
You renew my strength,
And make my feet
Like the feet of a deer,
So I can tread the heights.

With you
I can stand against a troop,
Scale a wall,
Walk and run –
Even fly like an eagle.

You redeem my life from the pit,
Restore my strength,
And transform me
By the renewing of my mind.

Lord,
Thank you for your infinite goodness:
All my springs are in you.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Life

Life

For in him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28, NIV).

All creatures look to you to give them their food at the proper time. When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things. When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust (Psalm 104:27-9; NIV).

Then he [Job] fell to the ground in worship and said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised” (Job 1:20-21; NIV).

Lord,
My life is entirely
In your hands.

Please show me your will,
And help me
To follow it.

That’s all I ask.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
