Your timeless womb

I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb (Jeremiah 1:5; NLT).

God created human beings in his own image (Genesis 1:27; NLT).

How short is life! (Job 14:1; NLT).

The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7; NIV).

*******************************************

From the day we leave
Your timeless womb,
Lord God,

To start our finite lives
On this,
Your earth,

Each moment
Brings us closer
To our death,

When we return,
To merge again
With you.

Returning home

“Return home, you wayward children,” says the Lord (Jeremiah 3:14; NLT).

If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored (Job 22:23; NLT).

If you return to me, I will restore you (Jeremiah 15:19; NLT).

Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved (Isaiah 30:15; NLT).

Lord,
May we,
Your wayward children,
Return home to you
Repeatedly
Throughout our lives,
So that our souls
May be restored.

Returning

I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one (John 17:22; NLT).

The spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7; NIV).

Return, O my soul, to your rest (Psalm 116:7: ESV).

Lord,
I cannot reconnect with you,
For we are one.

Neither can I reunite with you,
For we are one.

I can only return to you, repeatedly –
For we are one.

I trust in you

I trust in you, my God! (Psalm 25:2; NLT).

You, God, are […] my God on whom I can rely (Psalm 59:17; NIV).

I cling to you (Psalm 62:8; NLT).

I will be a sanctuary to you during your time in exile (Ezekiel 11:16; NLT).

The spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7; NIV).

Father,
I trust in you,
Rely on you,
And cling to you,

For I’m part of you,
In exile,
Here on earth,

And to you
I will return,
When life is done.

Crossing the bay

The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7; NIV).

Return, O my soul, to your rest (Psalm 116:7: ESV).

Clouds and thick darkness surround him (Psalm 97:2; NIV).

Lord,
When, at last,
It’s time for me to die,

May my soul
Fly swiftly back to you,

Like the cry
Of a seagull

Crossing the silent darkness
Of the bay.

The royal law

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2; NLT).

If you really fulfil the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself,” you are doing well (James 2:8; NIV).

Return, O my soul, to your rest (Psalm 116:7; NLT).

Lord God,
No matter what this day may bring,
Please help us to fulfil your royal law,
By bearing one another’s loads
As best we can,
Till we return
To rest with you
In sleep.

Lord God,
No matter what this life may bring,
Please help us to fulfil your royal law,
By bearing one another’s loads
As best we can,
Till we return
To rest with you
In death.

Amen.
