The dance of love

Despite our faults
You love us, Lord,
And long
To help us grow.

Despite our sins
You care for us
And want your love
To flow

Through us
To other people,
To earth
And sky above –

Heal our selfish hearts,
So we can join
Your dance of love.

He loves us with unfailing love (Psalm 117:2; NLT).

We are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ (Ephesians 4:15; RSV).

He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7; NIV).

There is […] one God and Father, who is over all and in all and living through alL (Ephesians 4:5-6; NLT).

The hearts of these people are hardened (Matthew 13:15; NLT).

God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them (1 John 4:16; NLT).

The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love (Galatians 5:6; NIV).

When I crave sympathy

When I crave sympathy,
Forgetting love is key,

You tell me straight
What I must do:

Take up your cross,
Like me.

When I am selfish,
And my heart is feeling numb,

 You tell me straight
What I must do:

Now, leave your nets,
And come.

When I’m ungrateful,
And forget you’ve set me free,

You tell me straight
What I must do:

Leave all,
And follow me.

Then [Jesus] said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23; NLT).

Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” And they left their nets at once and followed him Mark 1:17-18; NLT).

As Jesus left the town, he saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him (Luke 5:27; NLT).

You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32; NLT).

If we would only stop

He shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more (Isaiah 2:4; KJV).

Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it (Psalm 34:14; NLT).

Lord God,
If we would only

Being selfish,

And violent towards others,

Hate would end
Throughout this world,
And peace would reign.

God’s image

So God created human beings in his own image (Genesis 1:27; NLT).

Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48; NIV).

The LORD looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one (Psalm 14:2-4; NIV).

You are the God who sees me (Genesis 16:13; NIV).

Heavenly Father,
You made us
In your image,
To be perfect –
Just like you.

Yet with every passing day
We choose to be
More selfish,
And brutish;

More ignorant,
And greedy;

More sinful,
And corrupt.

How must you feel, Lord,
As you watch us
Growing ever less like you?

Like Christ

First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye (Matthew 7:5; NLT).

Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ (Ephesians 5:2; NLT).

Rather than wanting others
To be as we’d prefer,
Help us to confront
Our own judgemental minds,
Our selfish, unkind hearts,
And loveless souls.

Help us to look squarely
At ourselves,
So we can learn,
And change,
And grow,

Until we’re living a life
That’s filled with love –
Like Christ.
