A vagrant

Christ our Lord,
A vagrant
With no beauty in man’s sight;

Christ our Lord,
Despite your rags
You wear a robe of light;

Christ our Lord,
God’s only Son,
Who heals, forgives, and saves;

Christ our Lord,
You suffered death for us,
Your willing slaves.

Lord,
I breathe you in,
So I can start the day.

Please help me to remember you,
And always, Lord, to pray.

Lord,
I’m stretching now,
So I can join the dance.

Please help me to remember you,
And always offer thanks.

Lord,
I’m standing up,
So I can face the fray.

Please help me to remember,
And rejoice in you, today.

Lord,
I’m ready now,
Prepared to hear your call.

Please help me to remember you,
And be the slave of all.

Your willing slave

The slave may declare, ‘I love my master [and] I don’t want to go free’ (Exodus 21:6; NLT).

I would even be willing to become a slave, washing the feet of his servants (1 Samuel 25:41; NLT).

Since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet (John 13:14; NLT).

Whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave (Matthew 20:27; NIV).

Choosing

Don’t you realise that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? (Romans 6:16; NLT).

Choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! (Deuteronomy 30:19; NLT).

Choose life instead of death! (2 Kings 18:32; NLT).

Lord,
I can’t choose
To change
My feelings,

But I can choose
To change
The patterns of thought
That generate them.

Officials, leaders and rulers

Officials, leaders and rulers

Now then, you kings, act wisely! Be warned, you rulers of the earth! (Psalm 2:10; NLT).

Justice – do you rulers know the meaning of the word? Do you judge the people fairly? (Psalm 58:1; NLT).

So Jesus called them [the disciples] together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else (Mark 10:25-42-4; NLT).

Lord,
I pray for all officials,
Leaders and rulers –
Those with power
Throughout your world.

Please fill their hearts
With wisdom, love,
Justice, peace,
And mercy.

Help them to serve
Their people fairly,
So they can stand before you
Without shame, each day.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Prayer

Ash Wednesday

The germ of this prayer came to me during an Ash Wednesday service this week. I had to jot it down quickly, so I didn’t forget it.

Ash Wednesday

Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired hands (Luke 15:18-19; NIV).

Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all” (Mark 9:35; NIV).

Father,
I have sinned against others,
Against heaven,
And against you.

Even when I do my very best,
It’s totally inadequate.

I’m not worthy
To be called your daughter,
Your hired hand,
Or even your servant.

Instead,
I will gladly obey you,
As your willing slave.
