Like Christ

Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father (John 14:9; NLT).

The Spirit helps us in our weakness (Romans 8:26; NRSV).

The Lord – who is the Spirit – makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image (2 Corinthians 3:18; NLT).

Lord God,

You sent your glorious Son
To show us
What you’re like.

Despite our weakness,
May your Spirit help us
To grow more and more like him.

My sorry life

Lord,
I lay my sorry life
Before you –

Folly, weakness,
Ignorance,
And fear.

Sickness, sin,
Self-pity,
Deep resentment –

This is the
Wretched harvest
Of each year.

Hear me, Lord,
As I bow down
Before you;

Save me,
Though I have betrayed
Your trust.

Forgive my sins;
Restore and heal
My body;

And lift up
My poor spirit
From the dust.

I’m an outpost

I’m an outpost for the Father,
Here, in exile, on the earth.

I’m a cattle-stall for Mary,
Crying out, as I give birth.

I’m a lodging-place for Jesus,
Slowly growing like God’s Son.

I’m a temple for the Spirit,
Thanking him for all he’s done.

Our bodies come from dust

Our bodies come from dust, Lord God;
To dust they will return.

Our minds reach out to Christ, your Son,
The One from whom we learn.

Our hearts receive your Spirit, Lord,
The One so many spurn,

But our souls are part of you, Lord God,
The One for whom we yearn.

Our souls are part of you, Lord –
And to you they will return.

God’s essence

This prayer comes with many thanks to Fr. Leo Cooper for his inspiring words.

God is the essence
Of truth.

His Spirit descends
Like a sword

To strengthen his Son
For a lifetime,

For Christ is his essence
Out-poured.

God is the essence
Of healing.

His Spirit descends
Like a dove

To dwell in his Son
For a lifetime,

For Christ
Is the essence of love.
