Closing my eyes

Clouds and thick darkness surround him (Psalm 97:2; NIV).

He loves us with unfailing love (Psalm 117:2; NLT).

You have brought me into your presence forever (Psalm 41:12; NLT).

Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them (1 John 4:16; NIV).

…………………………………………………..

Lord,
Closing my eyes,
I sink into the darkness
Of your womb.

Closing my eyes,
I sink into the stillness
Of your love.

Closing my eyes,
I sink into the silence
Of your presence.

Closing my eyes,
I sink into the vastness
Of your peace.

Many thanks to Jim Marion’s book “Putting on the mind of Christ” for helping me to put these experiences into words.

I wait for you

Wait until the Lord comes (1 Corinthians 4:5; NIV).

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him (Psalm 37:7; NIV).

Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him (Psalm 62:5; NLT).

………………………………………………………..

I wait for you
In stillness, Lord;
I wait for you
In hope.

I wait for you
In silence, Lord;
I wait for you
In love.

I wait for you
In beauty, Lord;
I wait for you
In light.

I wait for you
In life, Lord;
And I wait for you
In death.

If we seek God

Keep on seeking, and you will find (Matthew 7:7; NLT).

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him (Psalm 37:7; NIV).

For God alone my soul waits in silence (Psalm 62:1; ESV).

Clouds and thick darkness surround him (Psalm 97:2; NIV).

Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray (Mark 1:35; NLT).

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands (Psalm 19:1; NLT).

You are the temple of the living God (Luke 17:21; NKJV).

If we seek God
We cannot fail to find him,

As long as we look
In helpful ways and places –

In stillness,
And in silence;

In solitude,
And darkness;

In people,
And in nature;

And in contemplation,
Deep within ourselves.

Rainbow light

Be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10).

Be silent before the Sovereign Lord (Zephaniah 1:7; NIV).

All around him was a glowing halo, like a rainbow shining in the clouds on a rainy day (Ezekiel 1:28; NLT).

The Lord is God, shining upon us (Psalm 118:27; NLT).

Lord,
As I sit,
Silent and still,
In your rainbow light,
May I be healed
Of all that drags me down,
And wears me out.

Sharing

If you are walking in darkness, without a ray of light, trust in the Lord and rely on your God (Isaiah 50:10; NLT).

When you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private (Matthew 6:6; NIV).

Be still before the Lord (Psalm 37:7; NIV).

Be silent before the Sovereign Lord (Zephaniah 1:7; NIV).

Lord,
Each day,
I rediscover
The joy
Of sharing
My darkness
Solitude,
Stillness,
And silence
With you.

Prayer

After I’ve shared

Be silent before the Sovereign Lord (Zephaniah 1:7; NIV).

The Lord is peace (Judges 6:24; NIV).

Be still, and know that I am God! (Psalm 46:10; NLT).

I am overwhelmed with joy in the Lord my God (Isaiah 61:10; NLT).

Lord,
After I’ve shared
My last few words with you
In prayer,
There comes a silence –
The deep, untroubled silence
Of your peace;

And after I’ve shared
My last few thoughts with you
In contemplation,
There comes a stillness –
The rich, creative stillness
Of your bliss.

Laid bare

Be still and know that I am God! (Psalm 46:10; NLT).

Be silent before the Lord, all humanity (Zechariah 2:13; NLT).

Wait patiently for him (Psalm 37:7; NIV).

Clouds and thick darkness surround him (Psalm 97:2; NIV).

Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me (Psalm 23:4; NLT).

When all my deeds
Have been laid bare
And stripped away,
Nothing remains
But stillness, Lord,
And you.

When all my words
Have been laid bare
And stripped away,
Nothing remains
But silence, Lord,
And you.

When all my thoughts
Have been laid bare
And stripped away,
Nothing remains
But patience, Lord,
And you.

When all my prayers
Have been laid bare
And stripped away,
Nothing remains
But darkness, Lord –
And you.
