No surprise

You made me (Psalm 119:73; NLT).

You know me (Psalm 139:21; NIV).

He hears us (1 John 5:14; NLT ).

You see me (Jeremiah 12:3; NIV).

He loves us with unfailing love (Psalm 117:2; NLT).

Lord,
What I’m like
Is no surprise to you,
Because you made me.

What I’m like
Is no surprise to you,
Because you know me.

What I’m like
Is no surprise to you,
Because you hear me.

What I’m like
Is no surprise to you,
Because you see me.

And what I’m like
Is no surprise to you,
Because you love me.

There is no grace
Like yours, Lord –

So why am I surprised
When you forgive my sins?

There is no care
Like yours, Lord –

So why am I amazed
When you restore my soul?

There is no love
Like yours, Lord –

So why am I astonished
When you bless me with peace?

“Foolishness” and “Surprise”

There are two prayers today, reflecting on the ups and downs of the spiritual writing process…

1. Foolishness

…my cup overflows (Psalm 23:5; NIV).

Father,
How foolish and wrong I can be!

I feared I might run out of prayers –
But you fill my cup until it overflows.

You give to me so freely –
Far more than I need!

Help me to trust
In your endless generosity.

Lord,
Thank you for enabling me to write
These prayers.

2. Surprise!

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer (Psalm 19:14; NIV).

Father,
You can always take me by surprise!

These prayers
Arrive so suddenly.

I’m shocked
To recognise each simple truth.

Help me to express
The insights you give me.

May each prayer reach
The one who needs it most.

I ask this in Jesus’ holy name,
Amen.
