Inner demons

Today’s prayer is a development from yesterday’s:

Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows (John 16:33; NLT).

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil (Matthew 4:1; NLT).

Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation (Matthew 26:41; NLT).

God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation (James 1:12; NLT).

****************************

Even you were tempted
By your inner demons, Lord –

The all-too-human urgings
Of your shadow –

So it’s no surprise
That we are tempted too.

Please help us
To endure temptation patiently;

To watch and pray,
So we will not give in;

For then we will become
Much more like you.

A warning

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them (Ephesians 6:4; NLT).

“Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne?” (Isaiah 49:15; NLT).

What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees! Hypocrites! You shamelessly cheat widows out of their property (Matthew 23:14; NLT).

“Yes,” said Jesus, “what sorrow also awaits you experts in religious law! For you crush people with unbearable religious demands, and you never lift a finger to ease the burden” (Luke 11:46 NLT).

Without wisdom and self-control,
Power can easily tempt us
To abuse those weaker than ourselves.

Parents, partners,
Teachers,
Religious leaders,

Lawyers, managers,
Police, and politicians,
Everyone – BEWARE!

Peace

Submit to God and be at peace with him (Job 22:21; NIV).

The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised (Job 1:21; NIV).

Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble? (Job 2:10; NIV).

For affliction does not come from the dust, nor does trouble spring from the ground; yet man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward (Job 5:6-7; NKJV).

God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation (James 1:12; NLT).

We cannot be at peace
With ourselves,
Or with God,
Until we embrace
Our physical and mental suffering
As part of life,
And part of who we are.

Self-pity

The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised (Job 1:21; NIV).

Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble? (Job 2:10; NIV).

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’ s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus
(1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; NLT).

God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us (2 Corinthians 1:3-4; NLT).

Lord,
Self-pity is so toxic!

It saps our patience –
Tempting us to give up
Helping ourselves
As best we can.

It fosters bitterness –
Tempting us to see
Our suffering as unfair,
Rather than a normal part of life.

It encourages selfishness –
Tempting us to ignore the fact
That others suffer too,
Throughout the world.

Lord,
Help us to overcome self-pity
And to count our blessings,
Thanking you in every situation,
Good and bad.

May our hardships help us all
To comfort others,
Giving meaning
To the troubles of our lives.
