Self and soul

My self is made of thoughts,

Which come and go,
And change, Lord,
Always new;

And though all these
Will end, Lord,
At my passing,

My soul won’t change,
For it is part
Of you.

I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb (Jeremiah 1:5; NLT).

I am the Lord and I do not change (Malachi 3:6; NLT).

The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7; NIV).

Your ways

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine” (Isaiah 55:8; NLT).

Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand (Philippians 4:7; NLT).

For you, a thousand years as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours (Psalm 90:4; NLT).

God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us (1 John 4:13; NLT).

My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever (Psalm 73:26; NLT).

Your ways
Are far beyond
My understanding;

Your peace
Is far beyond
What I can share.

Your light
Is far beyond
My human vision;

Your fire
Is far beyond
What I can bear.

Your thoughts
Are far beyond
My comprehension;

Your years
Are far beyond
What I can chart.

Your love
Is far beyond
My weak discernment;

Yet your Spirit
Dwells forever
In my heart.

Thoughts, words, and deeds

Please help me today
To notice my judgemental thoughts,
So I can hold them in check,
Changing them to blessings

Please help me today
To know when I’m about to speak hurtfully,
So I can hold my words in check,
Finding something positive to say,

And, Lord,
Please help me today
To stop myself from doing anything unkind,
Holding my impulses in check,
Then offering help,

Through Jesus’ name,

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you
(Isaiah 26:3; NLT).

In contemplation,
I watch my memories, worries,
Thoughts, and feelings
Drifting by –
Until they’re out of sight.

I needn’t add to them,
Or go with them,
Or try to block them from awareness,
Or hurry them away.

I just observe them, one by one,
As they drift by,
Until they’re out of sight,
Leaving me in perfect peace,
With you.

Thoughts, words and deeds

For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts (Mark 7:21; NLT).

I am determined not to sin in what I say (Psalm 17:3; NLT).

They defiled themselves by their evil deeds (Psalm 106:39; NLT).

I’m determined
Not to indulge
In unkind thoughts today.

Please help me
To think the best of everyone

I’m determined
Not to indulge
In angry words today.

Please help me
To speak with gentleness

I’m determined
Not to indulge
In heartless deeds today.

Please help me
To offer love to everyone

For your Son’s sake,

So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak (Genesis 32:24; NIV).

How long must I wrestle with my thoughts? (Psalm 13:2; NIV).

Be silent before the Sovereign Lord (Zephaniah 1:7; NIV).

…the kingdom of God is within you (Luke 17:21; KJV).

During contemplation,
I wrestle with myself –
Struggling with each intruding thought,
As I seek you in the silence
That is far beyond words.
