When we do all the talking

Father God,

When we
Do all the talking
During prayer,

It’s easy
To confuse our will
With yours.

Only when we listen, Lord,
In silence
For your voice

Can we hear
The gentle words
Our speech obscures.

Truly free

I thought some of you might be interested to see how a prayer can continue to grow, even after I think it’s finished. So here, as a bonus, is yesterday’s blog, with a brand-new, unexpected second half, written this morning:

Come, sit with me
And seek my voice;
Then you will know me,
And rejoice.

Come, rest with me
And seek my face;
Then you will share
My peace and grace.

Come, walk with me
And take my hand;
Then you will join
My pilgrim band.

Come, take your cross
And follow me;
Then you will find
You’re truly free.

Silence

When we’re afraid
To face ourselves in silence,
May we hear the whisper
Of your voice.

When we’re afraid
To face ourselves in private,
May we know your presence,
And rejoice.

When we’re afraid
To face ourselves in stillness,
May we find your peace of mind
And love.

When we’re afraid
To face ourselves in darkness,
May we sense the advent
Of your dove.

I heard the voice of God

I heard the voice of God announce:
Tell the people they are blind
If they do not see my body
In the earth, and in mankind.

I heard the voice of God declare:
Tell the people they are deaf
If they do not hear my anguish
In the cries of the bereft.

I heard the voice of God proclaim:
Tell the people they are lame
If they do not walk with me,
Nor venerate my holy name.

I heard the voice of God insist:
Tell the people they are dumb
If they do not spread the Gospel
Brought from heaven by my Son.

I heard the voice of God exclaim:
Tell them all they live in vain
If they do not know my presence
In their own, and other’s, pain.

Only one Father

There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him (Isaiah 11:1-2; NKJV).

There is only one Father,
And only one voice;

Only one Saviour,
And only one choice.

There is only one body,
And only one blood;

Only one Spirit,
And only one love.

There is only one mindset,
And only one soul;

Only one lifetime,
And only one goal.

There is only one pathway,
And only one Rod –

For we are all one
With each other, and God.
