Open my eyes

Open my eyes (Psalm 119:18; NLT).

God is love (1 John 4:16; NIV).

Lord,

Open my eyes,
So I may see your beauty;

Open my ears,
So I may hear your voice.

Open my mind,
So I may grasp your message;

Open my mouth,
So I may sing your praise.

Open my wounds,
So I may share your passion;

Open my hands,
So I may sow your peace.

Open my heart,
So I may know your presence;

Open my soul,
So I may spread your love.

Still, small voice

After the earthquake there was a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice (1 Kings 19:12; KJV).

Be silent before the Sovereign Lord (Zephaniah 1:7; NIV).

Lord, thank you
For your still, small voice
In silent prayer –

For how else could I hear
The thoughts
I constantly suppress?

Don’t expect voices,
Don’t expect tears,

Don’t expect visions,
Although God is near.

Wait, and be still,

Wait on our Father,
For this is his will.

Lord God,

Your voice within
Is still and small,

So we need silent prayer
In which to hear you.

Elijah

[Elijah] went into a cave […] and the word of the Lord came to him (1 Kings 19:9; NIV).

And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:12; NLT).

Listen to his voice (Deuteronomy 13:4; NLT).

Keep on seeking, and you will find (Matthew 7:7; NLT).

Be silent before the Sovereign Lord (Zephaniah 1:7; NIV).

Lord God,
Despite the passage
Of so many years

Since the holy, Hebrew prophet
Heard your voice,

We, too, still hear your whisper
In our hearts,

When we seek you out
In silent contemplation.

I contemplate

Christ is the visible image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15; NLT).

God speaks again and again, though people do not recognise it (Job 33:14; NLT).

He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love (Romans 5:5; NLT).

You also are complete through your union with Christ (Colossians 2:10; NLT).

Lord,
I contemplate
Your unseen face;

Listen
For your silent voice;

Experience
Your holy love,

And merge my soul
With yours.

Voice

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands (Psalm 19:1; NLT).

The voice of the Lord echoes above the sea (Psalm 29:3; NLT).

The mountains and hills will burst into song, and the trees of the field will clap their hands! (Isaiah 55:12; NLT).

There is one Lord […] who is over all and in all and living through all (Ephesians 4:5-6; NLT).

Lord,
When I don’t hear
Your voice
In silent prayer,
Your presence
Is proclaimed
By all creation.
