Ask, seek, knock

Can a person do anything to help God? Can even a wise person be helpful to him? (Job 22:2; NLT).

If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for all the world is mine and everything in it (Psalm 50:7,12; NLT).

Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you (Matthew 7:7; NLT).

For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known (1 Corinthians 13:12; NIV).

Father,

There is nothing I can do
To impress you.

Neither do you need my help
In any way.

Yet still you love me,
And desire my love.

So I’ll keep on
Seeking you,

And  knocking at your door,
Until it opens.

Then I will see you,
Face to face, at last,

And know you fully,
Just as I am fully known.

We’re your kin

He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have (Romans 8:3; NLT).

All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers (Luke 2:47; NLT).

Love your enemies! […] Pray for those who hurt you (Luke 6:27-8; NLT).

Jesus replied, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” Then he looked around him and said, “Look, these are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother” (Mark 3:33-5; NLT).

Lord,

You had a mortal body,
Just like ours,

And the finest human mind
There’s ever been.

Plus, you have such perfect love
For all the world,

And the wisest ever soul –
Yet we’re your kin.

Thoughts

How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver! (Proverbs 16:16; NLT).

To acquire wisdom is to love oneself (Proverbs 19:8; NLT).

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you (James 1:5; NLT).

Lord,
Some of my thoughts
Make me feel anxious,

Whilst others
Make me feel depressed.

Please help me
To choose my thoughts wisely!

Prayer

Like you

God is love (1 John 4:16; NIV).

Put on your new nature, created to be like God (Ephesians 4:24; NLT).

Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do (Ephesians 5:1; NLT).

“Love your neighbour as yourself” (James 2:8; NLT).

My Father,
You are love.

Please help me
To grow more and more
Like you –

Wiser,
Braver,
Kinder,
More mature;

More full of love
For others,
And myself.

Through your Son’s name,
Amen.

Questions

All who obey his commandments will grow in wisdom
(Psalm 111:10; NLT).

He shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more (Isaiah 2:4; KJV).

Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it
(Psalm 34:14; NLT).

Lord,
When will we grow wise enough
To beat our swords into ploughshares,
And our spears into pruning hooks?

When will we give up
Our guns and bombs,
Our tanks, and fighter jets,
And warships?

When will we learn
To make peace with one another,
Bringing our futile conflicts
To an end, at last?

Love

“ ‘And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength’ ” (Mark 12:30; NLT).

“ ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’ ” (Mark 12:31; NLT).

For God is so wise and so mighty (Job 9:4; NLT).

Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! (Romans 11:33; NLT).

Lord,
Learning to love you
Means learning to love others,
And learning to love myself.

How wise you are!

The armour of God

Put on the full armour of God (Ephesians 6:11; NIV).

“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16; NKJV).

Stay alert! Ephesians 6:18; NLT).

Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do everything with love (1 Corinthians 16:13-14; NLT).

Lord,
Thank you
For your armour.

I’m putting it on right now –
So I can face the day.

May your shield
Protect my body,

Your helmet
Protect my mind,

Your breastplate
Protect my heart,

And your sword
Protect my soul.

Help me to stay alert,
Always ready to defend myself
From toxic people –

Bravely,
Wisely,
And with love.

Through Jesus’ name,
Amen.
