Feeling self-righteous

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else’ (Luke 18:11; NLT).

From within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts […] slander, pride and foolishness (Mark 7:21-3; NLT).

Do not judge others, and you will not be judged (Matthew 7:1-2; NLT).

In their pride they seek to crush others (Psalm 73:8; NLT).

I hate pride and arrogance (Proverbs 8:13; NLT).

Human pride will be humbled (Isaiah 2:17; NLT).

Feeling self-righteous
Shows us we are wrong.

Criticising others
Is the same;

Whilst thinking we know best
For other people

Only proves that we
Have missed their point of view.

Please help us to be sensitive
To others,

So we don’t hurt them
Through our pride and scorn.

Prayer, spiritual development, personal growth, faith, exploration, wholeness,

Making allowances

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you (Colossians 3:13; NIV).

Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you (Matthew 7:1-2).

I often get things wrong,
And have to say I’m sorry,
So I’m always grateful
When people make allowances,
Forgiving me.

Please help me
To make allowances
For others,
And to forgive them, too,
As you forgive us all.

Indeed, we all make many mistakes (James 3:2; NLT).

Lead me in the right path, O LORD (Psalm 5:8; NLT).

“Keep on seeking, and you will find” (Matthew 7:7; NLT).

“I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid” (John 14:27; NLT).

When I forget
What I think I’ve learned,
And make mistakes,
And get things wrong,
Please help, heal, lead
And strengthen me,
So I can keep on
Following your path,
And seeking your peace
Of mind and heart.

In Jesus’ name,
