Faith

Faith

‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner’  (Luke 18:13; NLT).

For the law never made anything perfect. But now we have confidence in a better hope, through which we draw near to God (Hebrews 7:19; NLT).

…let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings (Hebrews 10:22; NIV).

Father,
If only I were sinless,
I would approach you
With such confidence –
But that will never
Be the case.

Instead,
I must rely on your mercy,
And on having faith
That despite my sinfulness,
You unfailingly allow me
To draw near.

And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image
(2 Colossians 3:18; NIV).

Worship the LORD with gladness (Psalm 100:2; NLT).

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus
(1 Thessalonians 5:18; NLT).

Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere (Ephesians 6:18; NLT).

Tell God what you need (Philippians 4:6; NLT).

Lord,
When I can’t contemplate you,
Please help me
To worship you instead;

And when I can’t worship you,
Please help me
To thank you instead;

And when I can’t thank you,
Please help me
To pray for others instead;

And when I can’t pray for others,
Please help me
To pray for myself instead.

Through Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Sin

Sin

“My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed (John 20:28; NLT).

Do not stay silent. Do not abandon me now, O Lord (Psalm 35:22; NLT).

…your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear (Isaiah 59:2; NIV).

My Lord and my God,
Do not stay silent;
Don’t abandon me now.

Forgive the sins
Dividing me
From you,
And let me hear
Your voice again,
I pray.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Contemplation

Contemplation

Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you (Proverbs 4:25; NLT).

For God alone my soul waits in silence (Psalm 62:1; NIV).

Jesus replied, “ ‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind’ ” (Matthew 22:37; NLT).

Lord,
I want to keep my mind
Fixed on you alone;
So when it drifts away,
Please help me
To bring it gently back.

Lord,
I want to keep my heart
Fixed on you alone;
So when it drifts away
Please help me
To bring it gently back.

Lord,
I want to keep my soul
Fixed on you alone;
So when it drifts away
Please help me
To bring it gently back.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Silence

Silence

Stand in silence in the presence of the Sovereign LORD (Zephaniah 1:7; NLT).

Be silent before the LORD, all humanity (Zechariah 2:13; NLT).

O God, do not remain silent; do not turn a deaf ear, do not stand aloof, O God (Psalm 83:1; NIV).

He let you hear his voice from heaven so he could instruct you (Deuteronomy 4:36; NLT).

Lord,
Here I am,
At last.

I’m listening –
Please speak to me
In the silence.

Let me
Hear your voice again,
And try to do your will.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Writing

Writing

“Here I am” (1 Samuel:3:4; NIV).

“O Lord, please leave me – I’m too much of a sinner to be around you” (Luke 5:8; NLT).

“Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you” (Luke 7:6-7; NLT).

“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:9; NIV).

…and after the fire, a still small voice (1 Kings 19:12; KJV).

Lord,
Here I am, in contemplation,
Overwhelmed by your presence,
And afraid.

Part of me wants to say:
“Lord, leave me! I’m a sinner,
And I don’t deserve to be near you.”

But a braver part of me says:
“Speak, Lord,
For your servant is listening.”

Then I write down
What you teach me,
As best I can.
