Peace and justice

They have not known the path of peace, and there is no justice in their ways (Isaiah 59:8; CSB).

I pray for peace and justice,
Here, in every mind on earth;

For sorrow, and repentance,
Here, in every heart on earth;

For mercy and forgiveness,
Here, in every soul on earth;

For truth and reparation,
Here, in every place on earth;

For reconciliation,
Here, and love of all, on earth.

To you who are willing to listen, I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you (Luke 6:27; NLT).

Injustice

Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? (Isaiah 58:6; NIV).

What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore justice and the love of God (Luke 11:42; NLT).

What gross injustice
We create
When we support
The exclusion of women
From anything at all,
Solely on the basis
Of their gender.

Humankind was created as God’s reflection: in the divine image God created them; female and male, God made them (Genesis 1:27; TIB).

Justice and peace

Will those who do evil never learn? They eat up my people like bread and wouldn’t think of praying to the LORD (Psalm 14:4; NLT).

The way of peace they do not know; there is no justice in their paths (Isaiah 58:8; NIV).

We pray for an end
To corruption and greed,

That mercy will flow, Lord,
For all those in need;

That justice will triumph
For those who are poor,

And for the cessation
Of hatred and war.

Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea (Isaiah 48:18; NLT).

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10; RSV).

Perspectives (for P. and R.)

Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me
(Matthew 25:40; NIV).

Feeling happy
Is less important
Than helping others.

Keeping
Is less important
Than giving.

Speaking
Is less important
Than listening.

Being well
Is less important
Than being kind.

Getting justice
Is less important
Than forgiving,

And receiving love
Is less important
Than loving others.

May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else.
(1 Thessalonians 3:12; NIV).

Love cares more for others than for self (1 Corinthians 13:3-7; TM).

Pray for peace

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
(Matthew 5:9; DRB).

I pray for peace
And justice, Lord,

Throughout this world,
In every mind;

In every body,
Heart, and soul –

For then, at last,
All will be whole.

If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your well-being like the waves of the sea.
(Isaiah 48:18; NIV).

Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.
(Psalm 34:14; NLT).

The way of peace they do not know; there is no justice in their paths. They have turned them into crooked roads; no one who walks along them will know peace. So justice is far from us, and righteousness does not reach us. We look for light, but all is darkness; for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows (Isaiah 59:8-9; NIV).

They will beat their swords into plows and their spears into pruning knives. Nation will not take up the sword against nation, and they will never again train for war (Isaiah 2:4; CSB).

You know me

I confess my sins; I am deeply sorry for what I have done (Psalm 38:18; NLT).

When I say, each day, “I’m sorry”,
You don’t want my lame excuses,
My defences serve no purpose:
Lord, you know exactly what I’ve done.

When I ask for your forgiveness,
You don’t like my sly evasions,
You don’t need my mitigations:
Lord, you know exactly what I’ve said.

When I beg for absolution,
You refuse my explanations,
My denials make no difference:
Lord, you know exactly what I’ve thought.

Yet, when I must stand before you,
You will not reject me, for you sent
And shared my trials and sorrows,
So your Spirit, deep within me,
Pleads on my behalf for mercy:
Lord, you are my Maker, and my Soul.

The LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (Genesis 2:7; KJV).

World-wide justice

Don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil (1 Peter 2:16; NLT).

Let true justice prevail (Deuteronomy 16:20; NLT).

We pray for world-wide justice, Lord:
For shame about the lies we’ve spun;
For confession, and contrition
As we weep for what we’ve done.

We pray for widespread mercy, Lord:
For sorrow that we’ve used brute force;
For repentance, and forgiveness
As we face our deep remorse.

We pray for global fairness, Lord:
For readiness to love our foe;
For penance, and for reparation
As we pay back all we owe.

We pray for perfect wisdom, Lord:
For faith and hope; an end to war;
For reconciliation, truth
And peace on earth, for evermore.

The Lord will mediate between nations and will settle international disputes. They will hammer their swords into ploughshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will no longer fight against nation, nor train for war any more (Isaiah 2:4; NLT).

You have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end (Isaiah 9:4-7; NIV).
