Arrow prayers

Introduction
I have been collecting arrow prayers for a while now, so I could share them with you. Here is the definition of arrow prayers offered by Perplexity:

Arrow prayers are short, spontaneous prayers that can be quickly “shot up” to God during any situation.

Such situations can be ordinary, irritating, depressing, or trying. They can be wonderful, joyful, blissful or ecstatic. They can be uncomfortable, painful, or frightening; panic-stricken, dangerous, or fatal.

There are many potential opportunities every day for these brief, direct contacts with God, as part of our ongoing communion with Him.

Each section of today’s bog ends with an arrow prayer, by way of example. I also include a list of further examples towards the end of this article.

A car crash
I can personally testify to the immense help and comfort arrow prayers bring. When I accidentally crashed my car over a cliff, landing upside down on a solid rock foreshore, I spontaneously shouted, “Help me, Father!”, at the top of my voice.

The whole car was smashed, and I am severely claustrophobic. Somehow, I was able to release my seat belt, wind down the window, and inch my head out until it rested on the bare rocks. Then I laid still, filled with peace, needing nothing else. I have no idea how I managed to do these things, but it has always seemed to me that they were done with the help of an angel.

Within a few minutes, a coastal rescue team reached me. They had been having a training session close by, and went into full rescue mode. I don’t know how long it took, but they carefully extracted me from the car, immobilised me on a stretcher, and carried me to a place where we could climb up off the shore to the ambulance waiting above.

I could have been killed. I could have killed someone else. The tide could have been in, and I would have drowned. But apart from severe bruising, my only injury was a cracked vertebra. Thank you, Lord!

Small irritations
Arrow prayers can be used in many situations, every day, so I use them a lot. When something irritating happens, however small, I immediately say, “Thank you, Jesus.” This prayer was passed on to me by someone who remembered a nun always responding in this way to anything negative that happened. It lightens the moment instantly. God is good!

Fears and phobias
Here in my care home, the only way I can reach the ground floor is by using the lift. A staff member would willingly go with me, but I want to be as independent as possible. Each time I enter the lift alone, I make the sign of the cross, then reach out to God with an arrow prayer, which lasts as long as it takes for the lift to move, and the doors to open again. This is unbelievably helpful. Only God, and John, my husband of 48 years, can fully appreciate what a huge achievement it is for me to be using a small lift on my own. I praise your name!

Arrow prayers for others
Arrow prayers can also be for other people. For example, we can ask God to bless those who clean a toilet we have just used, or help someone we have just been listening to. In this brief way, I pray for all those who use the lift I’m in, people I see, greet, or chat with in the corridors and waiting rooms at my GP surgery and the hospital. In the past I used to say arrow prayers for those I passed in the street, or shopped alongside in a supermarket.

Arrow prayers are a very appropriate response to seeing or hearing about other people’s suffering of all kinds, whether we encounter them in person, in a newspaper, on TV, or by word of mouth. They are also a good way of responding when we hear an emergency vehicle. Lord, save them!

Examples of arrow prayers
So here is the list of arrow prayers I have collected to share with you. Clearly there are many, many more. Some come from the Bible, whilst others spring spontaneously to our lips. The key is to develop a habit of constantly watching out for opportunities to use them.

All arrow prayers can be said for the self, for others, or for a group of people, by using the pronouns I, her, him, us, or them, like this: Bless him/her/us/them, Lord! (Isaiah 19:25; NIV).

Finally, these prayers can be said silently, or aloud, according to your circumstances, and repeated over and over again, as many times as you need to, throughout any experience, however wonderful or dreadful:

Take heart! (John 16:33; NLT).
Jesus, I trust in you (Psalm 25:2; NIV).
Jesus, I cling to you (Psalm 63:8; NIV).
Lord, save me! (Matthew 14:30; NIV).
Lord help me! (Matthew 15:25; NIV).
I love you, Lord (Psalm 18:1; NIV).
My Lord and my God! (John 20:28; NLT).
Lord, use my suffering for others (Colossians 1:24; NIV).
Hear my prayer! (Psalm 143:1: NIV).
Have mercy on me, Lord! (Psalm 51:1; NIV).
Deliver me, Lord! (Psalm 71:4; NIV).
Thank you, Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:18; NIV).
Your will be done, Lord (Matthew 6:10; NIV).
I am deeply sorry for what I have done (Psalm 38:18; NLT).
Forgive me, Lord (Luke 11:4; NIV).

Jesus
Of course, Jesus, as in all things, is the Master here. He is our constant example of how to use arrow prayers. Here are some examples from the final hours of his life:

  • Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do (Luke 23:34; KJV).
  • My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Matthew 27:46; NIV).
  • I thirst (John 19:28; NKJV).
  • It is finished (John 19:30; NIV).
  • Father, into your hands I commit my spirit (Luke 23:46; NIV).

Conclusion
Arrow prayers can never replace our longer silent or spoken prayers, but they can help us to stay fully in touch with God each day, in every situation or need. For me, they are a vital part of fulfilling Paul’s advice to the Thessalonians: “Pray continually” (1 Thessalonians 5:17, NIV).

O Lord, please hear my prayer! Listen to the prayers of those of us who delight in honoring you. Please grant me success today by making the king favorable to me. Put it into his heart to be kind to me (Nehemiah 1:11; NLT).

In my distress I cried out to the LORD; yes, I cried to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry reached his ears… He reached down from heaven and rescued me (2 Samuel 22:7,17; NLT).

Hell on earth

How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days (Matthew 24:19; NLT).

I pray for those whose lives
Are hell on earth:
The sick; the grieving;
Those who lack self-worth;

The homeless; those in prison;
Lost; abused;
The poor; the dying;
Those who are confused;

Those with mental illness;
Lonely; sad;
And those who are rejected –
Seen as ‘bad’;

The hungry; refugees,
And those who thirst
For hope, Lord:
Help us all to put them first.

Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:42-5; NLT).

The last will be first, and the first will be last (Matthew 20:16; NIV).

Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, and there will be famines and plagues in many lands (Luke 21:10-11; NLT).

They are like stunted shrubs in the desert, with no hope for the future. They will live in the barren wilderness, in an uninhabited salty land (Jeremiah 17:6; NLT).

I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him? (Psalm 42:2; NLT).

When the poor and needy search for water and there is none, and their tongues are parched from thirst, then I, the LORD, will answer them. I, the God of Israel, will never abandon them (Isaiah 41:17; NLT).

Love your neighbour as yourself (Leviticus 19:18; NLT).

Love the stranger (Deuteronomy 10:19; NKJV).

Show love to foreigners (Deuteronomy 10:19; NLT).

Love your enemies (Matthew 5:44; NLT).

When you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me (Matthew 25:45; NLT).

We lift our hands

Pour out your hearts like water to the Lord. Lift up your hands to him in prayer (Lamentations 2:19; NLT).

We lift our hands to you
And pray for peace,
Begging that all our senseless wars
Will cease.

We lift our minds to you
And pray for light,
Till everyone is precious
In our sight.

We lift our hearts to you,
And pray for love,
So all our foolish hate
Will end for good.

We lift our souls to you,
And pray for grace –
May everyone on earth, Lord,
See your face.

Turn us again to yourself, O God. Make your face shine down upon us. Only then will we be saved (Psalm 80:3; NLT).

The Lord is peace (Judges 6:24; NLT).

God is light (1 John 1:5; NLT).

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God (John 1:9-12; NIV).

Anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love (1 John 4:8; NLT).

The grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people (Titus 2:11; NLT).

Let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most (Hebrews 4:16; NLT).

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all (2 Corinthians 13:14; NLT).

Let your face smile on us, LORD (Psalm 4:6; NLT).

Justice and peace

Will those who do evil never learn? They eat up my people like bread and wouldn’t think of praying to the LORD (Psalm 14:4; NLT).

The way of peace they do not know; there is no justice in their paths (Isaiah 58:8; NIV).

We pray for an end
To corruption and greed,

That mercy will flow, Lord,
For all those in need;

That justice will triumph
For those who are poor,

And for the cessation
Of hatred and war.

Oh, that you had listened to my commands! Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling over you like waves in the sea (Isaiah 48:18; NLT).

Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10; RSV).

Call us

I am the LORD, the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name (Isaiah 45:3; NLT).

Lord,

Please call us all by name,
And teach us to make peace.

Help us to end our foolish wars;
Make greed and hatred cease.

May we repent; forgive our sins,
And fill us with your light –

For you create us all, and we
Are precious in your sight.

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful servants (Psalm 116:15; NIV).

I am tired of living among people who hate peace. I search for peace; but when I speak of peace, they want war! (Psalm 120:6; NLT).

Keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies! Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it (Psalm 34:13-14; NLT).

Let them make peace with me; yes, let them make peace with me (Isaiah 27:5; NLT).

If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light (Luke 11:36; NLT).

God, the LORD, created the heavens and stretched them out. He created the earth and everything in it. He gives breath to everyone, life to everyone who walks the earth (Isaiah 42:5; NLT).

The eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is clear [spiritually perceptive, focused on God], your whole body also is full of light [benefiting from God’s precepts]. But when it is bad [spiritually blind], your body also is full of darkness [devoid of God’s word] (Luke 11:34; AMP).

An end to war

I will make peace your leader and righteousness your ruler. Violence will disappear from your land; the desolation and destruction of war will end (Isaiah 60:17-18; NLT).

Lord,
Help us bring
An end to war,

So we will hate
And kill
No more,

But be content
To live
In peace –

Then all our
Senseless strife
Will cease.

They will beat their swords into plows and their spears into pruning knives. Nation will not take up the sword against nation, and they will never again train for war (Isaiah 2:4; CSB).

Pray for peace

Pray for peace (Psalm 122:6; NLT).

Let’s pray for peace
Throughout the world,
In every mind, and heart,
And soul:

Lord,
Help us bring
An end to war,
For only then
Can all be whole.

The boots of the warrior and the uniforms bloodstained by war will all be burned. They will be fuel for the fire. For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end (Isaiah 9:5-7; NLT).

The LORD will mediate between peoples and will settle disputes between strong nations far away. They will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will no longer fight against nation, nor train for war anymore. Everyone will live in peace and prosperity, enjoying their own grapevines and fig trees, for there will be nothing to fear. The LORD of Heaven’s Armies has made this promise! (Micah 4:3-4; NLT).

He makes wars cease throughout the earth. He shatters bows and cuts spears to pieces; he sets wagons ablaze. “Stop fighting, and know that I am God, exalted among the nations, exalted on the earth” (Psalm 46:9-10; CSB).

All people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever (Micah 4:5; KJV).

His hands make whole (Job 5:18; KJV).

He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever (Revelation 21:4; NLT).

Filling my soul

I had to wake up early yesterday morning for some work to be done in my house. Whilst I was praying, these verses arrived:

The Spirit, too, comes to help us in our weakness. For we don’t know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit expresses our plea with groanings too deep for words. And God, who knows everything in our hearts, knows perfectly well what the Spirit is saying, because her intercessions for God’s holy people are made according to the mind of God (Romans 8:26-7; TIB).

Filling my soul,
You pray within me –
Lord, I’m your willing slave.

Pleading on my behalf
For others –
Lord, please forgive and save.

Making me weep,
With sighs and groaning –
Lord, please touch every mind,

Ending our hatred, wars
And bloodshed –
Heal us, for we are blind.

In their blind conceit, they cannot see how wicked they really are (Psalm 36:2; NLT).

You will open the eyes of the blind (Isaiah 42:7; NLT).

Praying for peace

I woke early today, and immediately began to pray about the dreadful situation in Ukraine and Russia. Within a few minutes, these verses started to flow, and I had to “break off” from praying in order to write them down.

As I wrote, I began to realise that perhaps I wasn’t really “breaking off” at all, because the act of struggling to put what I saw into words was simply a continuation of my prayer. I’ve seen this intellectually for a long time, but today I saw and felt its truth – for a short while, at least.

This is the fastest I have ever written a prayer, then published it immediately, but I have been driven to do so today, so it’s not as polished as usual. Please forgive my shortcomings: I will continue to develop this piece during the day.

You will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately (Matthew 24:6; NLT).

If only you had paid attention to my commandments! Your peace would have been like a river, and your justice would have been like the waves of the sea (Isaiah 48:18; CPDV).

Keep praying for peace,
And never give up –
Though things look hopeless,
Never give up.

Keep pleading for justice,
And never give in –
Though it seems useless,
Never give in.

Keep begging for truth,
And never give way –
Though it seems futile,
Never give way.

Lord, You have plans
We can’t understand –
Thy Kingdom come,
And thy will be done.

May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10; NLT).

Give judgment in your gates for truth, justice, and peace (Zechariah 8:17; NKJV).

Peace and justice

This blog came directly out of my personal, spoken prayers yesterday:

If only you had paid attention to my commandments! Your peace would have been like a river, and your justice would have been like the waves of the sea (Isaiah 48:18; CPDV).

I pray for peace and justice, Lord,
Throughout this troubled world,
That everyone will listen,
And your voice, alone, be heard.

I ask for deep repentance, Lord,
Throughout this troubled world,
That every heart will turn to you,
And every conscience stir.

I beg for care and kindness, Lord,
Throughout this troubled world,
That selfishness will be renounced,
And sharing be preferred.

I plead for hope and healing, Lord,
In every human soul,
That all will learn to live in love,
For then we will be whole.

God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them (1 John 4:16; NLT).
