One-way relationships

Hello everyone. All my life I’ve struggled over how to handle “relationships” in which I offer support to people who are clearly struggling, only to find, months later, that they will consume any amount of help without ever beginning to reciprocate in any way. Feeling ignored, hurt and taken for granted inevitably leads to resentment. Then I wonder how to handle the situation in a Christian way, without ever knowing how this should be done. Hence today’s prayer!

One-way relationships
* But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back
(Luke 6:35; NIV).
* Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces (Matthew 7:6; NIV).

Father,
How should I relate to those
Who offer nothing in return
For endless support?

They take,
Yet show no care for me,
While knowing
I have troubles of my own.

I’m worn out, Lord!
I’m tired of being hurt
By those who don’t reciprocate.

How should I handle
These one-way relationships?

Should I suppress how I feel,
Continuing to offer help?

Should I give honest feedback,
Speaking the truth with love?

Or should I withdraw,
Protecting myself from further harm?

Father,
Please show me your will,
And help me to put it into practice.
