A counsellor’s prayer

A counsellor’s prayer

But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction (Job 36:15; NIV).

Speak the truth to each other (Zechariah 8:16; NIV).

The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love (Galatians 5:6; NIV).

Please help me
To build therapeutic relationships
With those who suffer.

Help me not to judge,
But to accept them as they are,
So they can slowly learn
To accept themselves more fully.

Help me not to advise,
But to listen;
Not to pretend, or conceal myself,
But to be open and honest,
So they experience
New ways of relating to others.

May I never collude
With those who believe they can do nothing
To help themselves,
Instead encouraging them
To explore the connections between
Their problems, thoughts, feelings,
Symptoms and behaviours,
So they can develop insight,
Change and grow.

Help me to maintain
My own boundaries,
To be aware of my limits and limitations,
To preserve confidentiality,
And to get help
When I am out of my depth.

Finally, Lord,
Please help me
Never to forget those who suffer,
But to pray for them every day.

In Jesus’ name,

The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised (Job 1:21; NIV).

But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction (Job 36:15; NIV).

…he is not far from any one of us (Acts 17:27; NIV).

The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth (Psalm 145:18; NIV).

Please help us
To get to grips
With our own ill-health,
Both physical and mental.

Help us to learn from it,
And to change and grow
Through facing it courageously
With you.

In Jesus’ name,

Light and love

Light and love

You, LORD, are my lamp; the LORD turns my darkness into light (2 Samuel 22:29; NIV).

For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light (Psalm 36:9; NIV).

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us (1 John 4:10; NIV).

You bathe me
In light
And love.

I worship you,
My Lord and my God –
How great you are!

Restless mind

Restless mind

I’m trying to reach out to you;

But it’s hard to clear my restless mind
Of all my thoughts and memories,
Ideas, and worries, and plans.

Please help me
To set everything aside for a while,
So I can focus on you alone.

In Jesus’ holy name,

Service and surrender

Service and surrender

“The LORD brings death and makes alive; he brings down to the grave and raises up”
(1 Samuel 2:6; NIV).

As no one has power over the wind to contain it, so no one has power over the time of their death (Ecclesiastes 8:8; NIV).

“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour”
(Matthew 25:13; NIV).

“This very night your life will be demanded from you” (Luke 12:20; NIV).

Thank you for my life,
Which is entirely
In your hands.

One day,
I must surrender it
To you.

Until then,
Please help me
To serve you
With every thought,
Word and deed,
As best I can.

In Jesus’ name,

Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us (Luke 11:4; NIV).

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you (Colossians 3:13; NV).

Please help me
To forgive old hurts,
Both great and small,
Then to let them go;
And may those I’ve hurt
Forgive me too.
In Jesus’ name,

Prayer for the day

Prayer for the day

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16; NIV).

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength (Mark 12:30; NIV).

Love your neighbour as yourself (Mark 12:31; NIV).

Please help me today
Not to complain,
But to rejoice
In every challenge;

Not to forget you,
But to pray to you
All day long;

Not to wallow in self-pity,
But to thank you
In all circumstances;

And not to sin,
But to love and serve you
With all my heart.

In Jesus’ name,
